Sup guys,
I am going to get an internal dvd burner to back up my movies. Just wondering if it really takes 2 hours to burn a movie (I heard you have to rip them first onto the hard drive)? Thx.
JACK
no if ur coping from a dvd to a blank dvd it should take under 30mins takes me 25 mins thats dependant on how fast ur comp is. and i use dvd x copy platinum works perfetc
depends which way you planning on backing up your movies. advance way takes 20+ hours or so to encode and burn.
beginners way, dvdshrink or dvdxcopy, takes from 30 mins to 2 hours.
for me the advance way was way too complicated. i never completely gotten through a guide. something always go wrong. so i just stuck with beginners way.
dvdshrink and dvdxcopy doesn't encode movies. they transcode. so if you want perfect, undistinguishable quality then go with the advance way of encoding and burning.
transcoding is fine for me. it might not be as good but it's good enough.
i use dvdshrink. first i rip the whole dvd as an image with dvd decrypter. this would be around 8gb. It takes 25mins or so. Once I have the dvd ripped I use daemon tools to mount it into the virtual dvd drive. Once it is mounted, I open it with DVDshrink(you could have skipped the above steps and open the dvdrom through dvdshrink but i prefer the image due to it being slightly faster and stable). I uncheck the audio files i don't want and decrease the ratio for menus and extras while increasing the main movie as much as possible. Once I am done, I analyze(optional, improve quality) the dvd which would take 45mins or so. Once it's finish analyzing it starts to transcode which takes another 45mins. I then burn the files using nero. burning process takes around 35mins with dvd-r(2x) and 15mins with dvd+r(4x).
i have a 4x dual format burner. mine is kinda a old burner. newer ones should have better firmware making it so you read quicker. it probably won't take as long as me. so yea look for them 8x if you can.

I guess I will try it with dvd shrink and nero. My other question for you is how you burn dvds at 8x? Most of the blank dvds out there only support up to 4x. And also, if I want to make up back up copies for movies, should I get the +R or -R, or it doesn't really matter? Thx.

there are 8x media out there. and i heard that some 4x media you can burn at 8x. it don't really matter if u get +R or -R. but it'll be wise if u find a format of each and test it on ur dvd player to make sure.

The first DVD that I backed up was Fightclub.... I played it for my friends when we were hanging out and didn't tell them that it was burned till the end.
