So my mom just picked up a new desktop and she's trying to figure out how to run the internet to both computers in the house (new and old).
Her ISP is AT&T/Yahoo/SBC DSL... it runs to her current router and then out of the Ethernet port to the new computer. Now here's the question I guess you could say.... her router has only 1 Ethernet port out, but the guy from AT&T said that she could run a Y out of the one port to run a hardline to the other computer, and keep one going out to the new computer, but my older brother said that she couldn't..... So is she gonna need to buy another router with more Ethernet ports out?
Now I'm trying to convince her to go wireless to the old computer so she can put it in the other room instead of keeping it here and clogging up this small ass room more than it already is. I know she's gonna need a Wireless Router and a USB Plug-in/Wireless Card, correct? But, I don't see anywhere to plug in a wireless router on her current router from AT&T... There's only 2 plug-ins on the back (ethernet out, DSL in) ... or will the DSL line run first to the wireless router, then hardline it to the old router, then hardline it to the new computer through the ethernet port?
I dunno.... I'm kinda fucked up tryin to figure this shit out..... if I confused you, I'm sorry, cuz I'm confused myself....
Basically how the fuck do I get internet to both computers?

are you sure she has router, from what youre describing it sounds like the modem itself. the modem would only have 1 phone line port in(dsl signal) and an ethernet port out(computer). routers have 1 ethernet port in(from the modem) and 4 ethernet ports out(to the computer) with no phone line ports.
anyways sounds like you need pick up a router, this is how its gonna be setup
if youre gonna wireless with the second computer all you need is the wireless card for it. the wireless router will already have an antenna, no need to plug in a transmitter.
The more I think about it, you're probably right. She said the guy from AT&T said it was a router, but it sounds just like a modem to me.
I'da prolly figured it out by now if I didn't wake up and start rolling blunts and mixing white russians, but whatever right?
What you described sounds like what she needs to do though. Now for the meantime until she goes and buys the wireless router, can she pick up a regular router to run a hardline to the other computer? Set up the same way as you said with the regular router in place of the wireless one?

definitely, just about all routers have at least 4 outputs.
Awesome.... but maybe I should have listened while she was on the phone with AT&T... lol she just ordered a wireless router... should be here in a few days
oh yeah, rep for you
