design for a tool (impact gun) need advice
I am going to school in detroit at college for creative studies and my newest assignment is to design a power tool. i have choosen an impact gun i need to improve on the design and so forth. I figured to get consumer imput would help out and probably score some extra points. So all you do it yourselfers out their. Throw down alitte anything about what you would like diffrent about an impact gun. Power settings, design, handles, supports, ...ect.
Just post alittle something i know its alittle off topic of this forum but i figured who would know better than the people that use them.
Are you thinking air powered or electric (cordless?) I don't use any air tools, but this just happened to pop into my insane mind...
An impact wrench that has 4 heads, either spaced at 100mm or adjustable by 2 or 3 presets (collar arond head to adjust between the different lug spacing).
This tool should be more gentle than a big impact wrench and have more accurate torque setting (right at 80ft/lb). It should automatically torque the lugs in a cris-cross pattern as would be done manually. In terms of "gentle" it should progressively torque each lugto 60 or 70ft/lb, continue the cris-cross pattern, then finish off at 80ft/lb. Maybe some kind of smooth clutch engagement?
To remount the wheel, the tool should "hold" all four lug nuts in the sockets. It should back them off at least 1/2 turn (slowly) before tightening them down to prevent cross-threading.
The tool should be a reasonable cost so that morons at some fix-it shops who typically overtorque lugs would buy it for convenience, automation, and speed.
Wacko huh?

Here's another idea: a cordless ratchet (1/4 drive, up to 20 or so ft/lb) that isn't $400 and giant like the Makita. Maybe use current cordless screwdriver technology and devise some kind of 90 degree head with a 1/4 drive on the end. I would buy that!!!

Thanks for all the input on that last post. The idea has very strong protential and i will sketch out some ideas for the design aspect and see what my prof thinks of the design. I am trying to keep the device under reasonable cost and give more precise power settings. Still am trying to come up with the style of how it will look. i want the power settings to be in front of the trigger on the botton of the upper body where the motor will be held. The tool will be air. Although the thought of making it half and half with a small electric motor. i am just not sure on how power full i can make an impact gun with electric.
keep the post coming i got till thursday night to get my presentation together and print off this message board and bind it as an add on for the presentation.
