Im fairly new to the whole scene of working on cars. Im learning pretty quick but still cant troubleshoot my own problems. im having a problem with my 88 accord right now. im close to 193,000 on it with a brand new carb, all fuel systems (pump, floats, etc.). Randomly, the engine will basically not respond to anything. no thorttle response, when i shift it still doesnt matter, no response an any gear. i have to actually shut off the engine, and turn it back on. then it works. today, i went into 2nd gear right before a speed hump. with the clutch in, the engine died and i got the oil and batter lights to come on and the engine would not start the 1st time. the oil and battery are only about 200 miles old. (replaced the other day). the 2nd time i tried to start the engine it skipped for about 5-8ish seconds and then started to turn over and still took alittle time and priming for it to do so.
Ive asked a few people and got a wide veriety of answers. i have no idea where to start! Joeyl posted in the accord fourms to check my grounds and battery teminals and make sure theyre clean. im going to start with this tomorrow and see how it goes. Ive also gotten answers saying that maybe its a frayed throttle cable getting stuck on something? I really dont feel like ripping the engine out to see what it is, but then again i dont want to take it to a shop and find out it was something that i COULD have done without spending a dime. any help or suggestions are appreciated greatly!

it has only 1 time. when i went over the speed bump today. all other times it just doesnt respond at all until i shut it off and turn it back on. Its really hard to explain in the right words. im going to pull out all the plugs tomorrow and check for gunk on them and make sure theyre gapped properly.
i dont know about carburated engines very much....do you have a map and tps sensor?

honestly, i have no idea! like i said im completly new to all of this. i understand MAP= massive airflow sensor? and TPS= throttle position sensor? but no idea what either of thoes do. lol. im only 17 (well... 3 minutes i will be ) and am obviously still learning.... slowly but surely.

well on a fuel injected motor, we have the map sensor and TPS sensor. They both sit on the throttle body. If you look at them, they look the exact same and will actually connect to each others ports. If you get them swapped up, the motor will still run at idle. But the second you give it gas, it will die. I really have no clue what your problems are since i'm not familiar with carburated motors. Your emissions is prolly completely different to what i deal with in my car. Hopefully someone else will come in here and help you out more than i can.

hmm well lets start narrowing down the field a little. First off whenever a car stalls out you'll get the battery and oil message <typicaly> because at that pointyour running off your battery not your alternator and there is no oil being pumped anymore as the engine isnt running. So thats all good.
Questions:
1) does the check engine light come on or flash when you start up your car?
2) Did you smell anything funny <in case of burnt out clutch>
3) As far as the throttle body cable goes I guess it could be kinked but I doubt it seeing as the problem goes away when you restart. Makes it sound more electrical to me. Would you like information on finding it and doing a visual inspection anyways?
4) Did you check grounds yet?
Its a little different going back to thinking about carbs as opposed to Fi so it'll take me a minute r three to get things straight in my head. Are there any other simptoms you can think of? What gears are you in when your having problems <I know you had the clutch in all the way and still stalled but hummor me>
Sputtering and not wanting to start could be electrical to the starter, starter, distributer, fouled plugs. or any or all of the above.
Well I need food and stuff so think about this and come back with some more info and we may be able to help more. It almost sounds like its flooding, which can happen if your carb isnt jetted correctly. But I dunno without checking it out myself.

when i start the car, i get the engine oil, battery, seatbelt, and parking break (only because its on). but they all go away within seconds.
2) Did you smell anything funny <in case of burnt out clutch.
that was my first guess only because 2 of my friends just replaced their clutch and all other components. but after talking with them i kinda eliminated that. all the symptoms didnt match up. the car doesnt shake or anything when i start out.

if you get a chance that sounds like i could give it a try.
4) Did you check grounds yet?
no, not yet. im gonna get on that today. it was late last night (1am) when i got the response.
