new rings?
So i have a LS hatch w/ gsr tranny. not to long ago, i noticed alot of smoke coming out of the exhaust, blue mostly. i check it out and asked people about it, and almost all of them said i needed new rings. my heart dropped because i don't have the money for that because i just moved out on my own not to long ago. But just today, i went to SRD out here in tempe arizona, and they said it might be something else, something i guessed before I was told it was rings. geez i'm sorry but i forgot what he said, but it was in the valvetrain. any help? oh its a 2001 b18b1

Check your valve cover gasket.. It may have a leak and you are leaking oil onto the header or so...

i wish i could help you, but i have exact same problem. my engine has supposively been leak tested but it puts out smoke, mostly in vtec. everyone keeps saying rings but i've also heard it could be something else, can't remember either. maybe the lifters? i'm too broke to get anything done right now too. how do you like SRD?

Valve seals or valves guides COULD be worn out. There is a way to test if its in your valvetrain or, its your rings. Do a compression test. write down what the compression is in each cylinder. Then, take like a 1/2 of a soda cap full of motor oil and pour it down the spark plug hole, after taking the plug out. Repeat the compression test. if the compression goes up considerably, then the rings are bad. If not, then its in your valvetrain. pray its in your valvetrain. There is probably a more in depth write up about compression tests on SHO, just search for it.
Could be rings or valve seals, or a combination of the two. How much oil are you consuming? How many miles on the car? Seriously consider a rebuild SOON. Put it in your budget. Do what you have to do...

While you're in there, you really should do a full rebuild. Then you can start over with 0 miles on the motor.
at what times does the smoke come out? is there a large blue puff at startup in the morning? light load smoking? heavy load smoking? are the tips of your plugs wet with oil?
