I can't seem to find any insight into the reliability of the 97 and older del sol's. Can any of you provide me with a bit of insight? Possible things to look out for when purchasing?
I know honda has a pretty good track record for making good cars and I'm hoping this applies to the del sol as well.

Pretty much the only thing I suggest is if it's a dohc ask about the timing belt if that snaps your gonna drop around $900 for repairs. If it's a SOHC or DOHC rev it high and check to see if smoke comes out the tail pipe. if it's grey or black you need a valve job, if white blown head gasket.
Mine has 165,xxx miles on it the only thing I've had to replace is the timing belt. car runs great.

perfect response. . .and so true, all a honda needs is that tlc and it wont let you down. love it like you would love your girlfriend lol
Agreed. I neglected to change my timing belt and at 133k miles it snapped while just normally driving. Cost me $400 to replace like 4 valves. And that was my discounted price. I learned timing belt is first thing that should be done on any car you purchase. Just did the timing belt on my SIR and found that it still had the original belt from when it was made, although its only at 97k miles.

may be a stupid question but what exactly should a worn timing belt look like. . .i took the valve cover off recently to see how clean everything was under there and to my surprise it was beautiful, absolutly immaculate, for 153k it was a nice sight also looked at the belt and it looked like it was in good condition i just dont know for sure though. . .seeing as how i like working on my own car im not worried about paying some honda tech to do it for me for my whole paycheck (forget that) when im perfectly capable. . .and yes i know about the belt being off on the cams when you change it, i will ask my honda friends to check it for me. . .im just curious. . .i think ill just take a picture next time i get a chance to take it off. . .i would appreciate some insight though, thanks

If you don't have a record of when the belt was last changed, assume it hasnt been. For $36 @ autozone, get your basic timing belt, its not too hard to change it your self, just mark across the belt and pulley at crank and cam, copy those marks (count the teeth) onto the new belt and reinstall the new belt on those marks. It helps to put two marks on the cam gear & belt and 1 mark on the crank & belt side so you get it right.

hmm yeah i think thats the next project. . .water pump too. . .yeah thats what i was assuming, as far as the person who owned it before the dude i bought it from i have no idea about maintnance, they must have kept it very nice, but him, not so much, he neglected her and drove her super hard burning out in it alot and then let her sit for a year without even thinking about her *tear* but now she is in the good loving hands of a person that appreciates the value and originality of hondas greatest creation. . . can i get an Amen!? lol. . .thanks alot
