This might be a strange answer to your question about the balance of the cylinders, but the answer is simple. Each cylinder has its own angle on the crankshaft. The number of crank angles is detemined by the number of cylinders, with a motor that has an even number of cylinders they divide it by 2. So you could theoretically have a straight 7. Also the volkswagon VR5 spoken about earlier is almost a straight five anyway due to the narrow 15 degree slant.
