Dulles, Va - what's it like?
I have a job opportunity in Dulles. Are there any cool places to live near there or cool things to do? Any SHO'ers hailing from out there?
Gimme da skinny
I used to live in Alexandria, Va not to far from Dulles. You are pretty close to D.C. so to answer your question.....YES there are plenty of things to do. Also you will be living pretty close to Chantilly, and I know there were a few happenin bars(sports). A lot of cool places in Old Towne Alexandria. Also if you like to golf there are a good number of golf courses around too. Penderbrook and Fairfax National were two I golfed a lot.

where would you live if you were working in Dulles making $95k/year? That's what I'm hoping to pull down on this job. I see Chantilly is 10min from Dulles but Alexandria is 45 minutes.
I'm not much of a golfer...Local bars are a must but are there any that are more like clubs with hiphop/house and a dancefloor? Is there a body of water nearby for some boating?
Thanks for the 411
Ashburn and Sterling seemed to be very nice places to live. My wife and I were going to move to Ashburn, but we decided to continue our education, which we will both be finished in a little less than a year. Every house/townhouse we looked at were very immaculate and rather newly built.
My old boss and friend lived in Sterling. I hung out at his house alot and the neighbor hood he lived in was pretty high class. The bars are plenty in these areas, and most of them have dance floors and play a lot of today's music. As for bodies of water, everybody seemed to go to the Chesapeake Bay. I didn't know of any other bodies of water close to the area. Also Baltimore is not to far away either.

I live in Leesburg, about 15 min. from Dulles. If you are coming from SoCal, I can tell you things are very diff around here, the biggest being the weather. It can be nice at times and it can be nasty at times. Spring and Fall are very nice, winters can be mild or we can get a couple feet of snow. Summers can be hot, but for the most part nice; However, it does get pretty humid out here.
As far as things to do, there is plenty to do around here being as this is the nations capital. If you are looking for house music and hip hop, your best bet is to trek over to D.C. If you are working around the Dulles area, Sterling, Chantilly, Herndon or even Leesburg are probably your best bets if you are single. If you have a family, Ashburn, South Riding, Brambeton or Leesburg are probably your best bets. All are within a 15-20 min drive to Dulles.

Hey thanks! Great info.
they said they'll fly me out there before I have to decide so I'll check all this stuff out. I'm not sold on moving out there yet but maybe when I lay eyes on it I'll get psyched....we'll see. Housing seems expensive! I mean so is SoCal but I didn't think it would be as bad as here.

well I've spent some time thinking about it...especially since it started looking like the offer will be for $85k, not $95k like I had hoped. I'm now leaning towards staying in SoCal since I love it out here and I think I can get that much money for a job just as good staying local.
But I'm going to take a trip out there if they'll fly me out...I'll check out those spots you guys mentioned. Thanks again for the info guys
i live in manassas park, va, and im a realtors assistant for my grandma, and the houses out there and in ashburn are great. its a great place to go. plenty of things to do. if you want to know about some houses or something i can get you some info.

Well I was out there from thursday to Sunday last week and I was pretty impressed. the area is nice. It is slower out by Dulles/Leesburg but I checked out Ballston/Clarendon for places to live. I really like that area. It looks like those towns are going to be pretty expensive but it's actually hard to find specific info about places in those towns - realtor.com doesn't seem to recognize them.
So I like it, and I'm working with the offer right now to see if I can put it together. It will be a big switch from SoCal but still fun with plenty to do. Thanks for all the help guys.
If anybody knows where I can find a 2+2 condo/townhome preferably with a garage in the Ballston/Clarendon area within a couple blocks from Wilson blvd holla back!

Yeh that's gonna be the biggest problem, moving here will be a shock if you are coming from Cali. It's aight around here, down in Alexandria, Chantilly, Leesburg and Ashburn it can get rather expensive so alot of people live up here and work down there but that means commuting and that shit sucks. I used to live in South Riding, great place to live, a tad expensive but worth it.

Well I got the offer, and reworked it to my liking...and it looks I'm moving to DC!
So watch out Mid-Atlantic SHO'ers, I'm all up ons. And with a good chunk of extra cash each month to make contributions to the moneypit of doom shown in my sig.
As an aside we-todd-did-racing is having a track day out there (south carolina I think?) Fair price, should be some cool cars there.
