5th gear when turbo = bad???
ok, so Ive heard when you turbo a honda motor, they dont like 5th gear pull??
Is this hearsay or true? I mean, 5th gear on the freeway at 65, what is wrong with hitting boost??
I heard the problem was with too much stress, but at 65 my tranny has my motor spining close to 4k. So how is that stressful??
I need insight. This crap is driving me insane.

I was asking around more and I think there is only a problem if you boost for a long time in 5th with a load (like, pinning the throttle in 5th for a LONG time) or just acellerating quickly in 5th. If you are just crusing steady its fine.
Thats a relief. Now I dont have to worry about going boom in 5th.

because the gear is longer you spend more time in it then the gear before that and the gear before that. couple that with aerodynamics and power production and you end up requiring the engine to take on its heaviest load to accelerate the car. higher loads = more heat and stress. more heat and stress = more potential for detonation and accelerated engine wear. its basically like walking upright while carrying a 200 lbs sack on your back and then crouching and walking with the same sack. its hard enough to carry the sack while walking and becomes rediculous when attemptng to crouch and carry it.

^^ Yup. I found that out shortly after asking.
BUT, you can still use 5th. But the limitation is for cruising. If you want to speed up, downshift to 4th and give it hell, just dont floor it when you are cruising in 5th and try to accellerate.
So, 65 in 5th, floor it while still in 5th and try to reach 100 = bad
65 in 5th, downshift to 3rd or 4th, then accellerate to 100 = safe
The only thing going on is you are preventing putting too much stress and load on the motor. Just like Rick said, its like sqatting with a big pack on and then trying to get back up. Downshifting is like taking the pack off, then standing back up, and then putting it on.

ok I see what you are saying...but....
A boost b16a should be putting out at least 220-250 WHP and like 160-200 torque.....combine that with the short geared b16 tranny and I can't imagine the engine struggling.

I know that the shorter gears factor in too, but the extra stress causes heat and possible detonation, so..meh, downshiting is more fun anyhow..

yup, u guys are right...creates a hotbed for heat and high stress...which induces detonation and high cylinder temps...which could lead to blown headgaskets, melted shit..and otherwise fucked up engines.
