tech wrench Broken Timing Belt

I got an old 1991 Honda Civic LX. I was driving down the street when the car died, i didnt know what it was, so i tried starting it again, but nothing. So after about ten minutes i pushed it back to my garage, but im wondering if it is worth fixing, and how difficult it would be. Right now, I am having trouble getting the crankbolt off, but besides that, I wanna know if it is worth doing. Any advice is appreciated. I have never done this before on this car, so i don't know where to begin, any advice or tips will help.

it's usually a 150-200$ part + labor unless your doing it yourself, what RPM were u at? if you bent your valves there's no point

when a timing belt actually breaks you have trouble. May want to just upgrade the engine at this point.

it depends a lot on rpm's if he was at like 6k rpms when it broke then the valves would be bent and the head junk etc but if he was at like 2-3k rpm's it might not be as big of a problem

if u weren't at high rpms it should be ok, i would take the head off and have it checked for bent valves tho ..... tired... must sleep

You dont need to remove the crank bolt if youre just replacing it. Use the bolt to position the crank at Top Dead Center. Remember to loosen the timing belt tensioner so you wont have to remove it, but I am gonna tell you it is hard to put on a timing belt without knowledge of what your doing.

i changed my timing belt on my b18 without a problem...just rap on it for awhile with an impact wrench then use a breaker bar with a 3 foot pole on it for leverage and it should come off. You have to take to crank pulley off to line up the tdc marks...you cant use the marking on te crank pulley for installing the timing belt. If it broke at any rpm your valve are probably fukd. Even at idle the pistons are traveling fast enough to bend them or at least compromise there structural integrity. This is where I would spend 2000 bucks and just get a b-series swap. Was it a honda belt or an aftermarket one??

It was the original honda belt, not an aftermarket one

Doesn't make a difference if it was an OEM or aftermarket timing belt. In OHC cars, single or dual, you're generally pretty fuct when the timing belt breaks. As for taking the crank pulley off to install a new timing belt, no you do not have to, but it does make it a *little* easier. I would leave the pulley on myself if I were changing it.

Yeah..i say swap in a new motor. I have a D15b2 (the one thats in your car right now) that I have in my '90 LX..its smokes like a train and backfires through the intake, shooting flames. You can have it after I do my motor swap, if you pay shipping..or maybe the head? head is fine.

i wanted to know if it was oem or one from like an oil change plce because ive heard that the oem honda belts were supposed to be superior and just wanted to know if it was a honda one that broke for my own enlightment. You can get a d-series head for dirt cheap from a junk yard. when i swaped my D out i just gave it to the local junkyard for like 100 bucks credit for random parts.
