I have a 99 Honda Prelude 5 speed and when I first purchased the car everything was running perfect and I checked my car at the Dealership to make sure that there is nothing wrong before I bought but when i wanted to change the fluids after two weeks, The book says that you can use regular motor oil if the MTF wasnt available, so I used the Mobile 1 Synthetic oil and as we all know that its more expensive than any other brand so I paid more in order to get more but right after I left the shop who changed the tran fluid, the transmission started to grind everytime the oil gets hot and especially when I shift on a high RPM. All the mechanics told me that I have a problem probably in the syncros of the Tranny and the oil type would never cause this grinding. I was so mad and I was seriouslly thinkin about changing the transmission but just to give it one more shot I changed the fluid again and I used The Honda MTF and like a magic my car stopped grinding and the tranny went back to normal. So To all of my Friends who own Honda, NEVER AND NEVER USE SYNTHETIC OIL in the TRANNY because its too slick and with high temp it becomes really thin which will kill your tranny syncros.
Ok...first off...SYNTHETIC TRANSMISSION OIL IS FINE FOR THE ENGINE. Mobil 1 is not made for the transmission. If you want to use Synthetic oil for the transmission, use some real stuff like Redline MTL. Think of it this way...engine oil, contrary to what people say, should stay in the engine. Transmission oil goes in the transmission. Yes, one can get away with using mineral engine oil for the transmission, BUT, the oil is not made for the transmission and expect the transmission to wear faster for those of you that like to drive hard and shift hard because it makes your car feel faster.
Plenty of people didn't know better before and crapped out their transmissions by using motor oil for the transmission, myself included. It should be used only as a last resort, like you drained your tranny oil and realized that you didn't have any tranny oil on hand. Use the motor oil, drive to the autoparts store and buy some tranny oil. Go home and switch it.

I am changing my tranny fluid today with synthetic MTF, I wasn't going to buy engine oil for it anyway so don't worry.

so are you saying that mody used the wrong oil for his tranny?

I think people are allowed to be wrong with dignity. It's hard to understand the differences these days when most autoparts stores don't even understand the differences. In all seriousness, if motor oil could be used fine in transmission fluids, why would Honda bother to market both a motor oil and a transmission oil through their dealerships? Some could say that they are doing it to charge more on the transmission oil, but really, they could keep that to themselves and just charge the motor oil for more and claim that it's it's the one thing ofr everything. Instead though, they have motor oil, and transmission oil avaible to those that actually read the owners manual.
Mody even stated himself that when he used motor oil in his engine, the thing started acting up, but when he switched back to Manual Transmission Fluid, things became ok again. There are additives and different compositions between the two. It wasn't a matter of synthetic or dyno in this case, it was just the fact that Mobil 1 Motor Oil is not made for the loads of lubricating a transmission. I do believe Mobil 1 even has that warning some place.
If I'm in a hurry for transmission oil, I've got no problem with Honda's MTF. The stuff works. I can run it for 10-15k miles and change it. It's cheap. I prefer Redline MTL though. It's synethic and my transmission shifts much smoother in all weather conditions with it in there. However, it costs about 8 bucks a quart. You'll need two. Anyways, that's my 2 cents.

i used mobile 1 10w30 in my 94 civic ex's 5 speed trans for the last two years i had it. never missed a shift or performed poorly... i don't see why people think that synthetic is going to perform so differently from regular. look it up in the manual they tell you either their transmission fluid or 10w30 oil. anways... it worked fine for me... then the car got stolen, stripped and pushed into a lake.
