i was thinking about getting my dad a new tool set soon. between us, we have a bunch of crappy taiwan tools that have broken (esp. the ratchets). anyways, i wanted a medium sized toolset from a reputable company, preferably with SOME kind of warranty. i saw a husky toolset on ebay, and apparently they have a lifetime warranty honored by home depot. i was also thinking craftsman, but husky is a little cheaper. i'm not trying to buy anything like snap-on or mac, cuz i don't have the need OR money for that. so, what brand would you recommend and why? (just DIY work)
Craftsman are my personal choice. They are good tools, with lifetime warranty. They replace with no questions asked and Sears stores are everywhere. Snap On and Matco are nicers tools, but you end up paying more and the Snap On or Matco guy isnt always available when you need something.
I have a craftsman tool set I bought a couple years ago, It has both mteric and standard sockets, short and deepwell sockets, it comes with a set of metric and standard wrenches, screwdrivers, nut drivers, ratchet extensions, 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 ratchets and sockets. All for under 200 bucks. I snapped the 1/2 ratchet in half and they gave me another no questions asked, and I got to keep the old one and i just welded it back together. I snapped a screwdriver trying to do something i probably shouldn't have been doing with it, and they replaced it free of charge. Craftsman is very good and I like the fact that I can go to sears and get any replacement i need. I forgot which set it is..but i want to say like 180 something..or 150 piece. Somethin, I would buy craftsman though. You can actually see it in my sig sitting ontop of that table.
Go with craftsman for the price and what you say you need them for, its the best. Snap-on and mac only worth getting if your going to work in a tool related field, like automotive. Since they really dont lose there price value, there like an investment. And like said above mac and snap-on are not sold in stores, you have to wait for there truck to come around to buy tools. But since i go to auto school allmost any mac/snap-on tools are 50% off, so ill get them instead of craftsman.
Right know I have a small craftman set that i use, and for just going household or small auto things they work great.

as of now, i can get a really good deal on a set of husky tools. so, as of now, the price difference between craftsman and husky is a lot. is craftsman so much better that it warrants a much higher cost? in other words, should i stay away from husky?

Only reason i would go with crasftman is that they have a lifetime warrante, so if you brake it you can just go get a new one. Or try and find someone selling used craftman, snap-on or mac that are kinda damage and take them in to get replaced.

have you guys read what he's saying? the huskies come w/ a lifetime warranty too. and from my personal experience, they hold up just as well as the craftsman if you can get the huskies for a whole lot cheaper, then go for it but if the prices differ by like $20, then just save up another $20 for the craftsman.

I've been really happy with my Metrinch kit. I looked at a craftsman kit, but it was just too bulky and not functional enough (without getting a truly huge kit). metrinch slides right under my driver seat and has everything that you need to take a honda apart.
If not metrinch, then craftsman would be my second choice. Of course there is snap-on, etc, but they are ridiculously expensive.
thanks alot for all of the quick responses! i guess i will take a look into craftsman. kommon sense, i looked at the metrinch site. where did you get your toolset from and for how much?
