tech wrench Help an old guy!

I'm a father of a 25 year-old guy. I want to get a Honda for us to build together into a streel-legal race car.

But which one?

I don't know jack about rice-rockets. I'm an American iron old guy, but I DO know about working on automobiles.

So help me a little, we're on a budget (of course). Don't want to put too much into the car because we're going to rebuild most of it. I DO want to make sure I get one that doesn't have inherent weaknesses built in (like it won't accept a bigger engine or a good transmission).

Suggestions?

Thanks!

go with one of these 2

you should go with either an 88-91 crx or an 91 integra but the crx would be the better bet because it a lot less weight in the body

Build an Domestic V8, you'll get away cheaper than you can an import. I dont know what fool said that you can build a fast import for cheap, but I have yet to see import parts cost less than parts for a small block Chevy or Ford. Nice 'Vette by the way.

spray004, I'm sure he's not going into it for the ease or bang for the buck value. I'm guessing his son is into imports, and that probably explains the interest.

I've been out of the Honda scene for long time now, but an early to late 90's civic hatch or late 80's to mid 90's CRX with a B16, B18, or H22 transplant would probably be a good start. I'll leave the specifics to the more knowledgeable guys here.

daloyal1 will become famous soon enough
i give you three choices, a 2 door 94-01 integra,02+rsx, or a 2 door 93-01 civic. if the guy's son wants a car i'd say nay on the crx because it's a 2 seater and not very safe without a roll cage, his son my wanna carry passengers when he goes out places.any way get a k20a(type-r) or k20a2(rsx-s) or a b18c-r or b18c i'd go with the jdm engines.and the k series i've heard can fit in the civic and integra.

like the guys said late 80's CRX, or an early 90's Civic or Integra... pretty much whatever one you buy your going to have to go with a motor/trans swap, so if you can find one without a motor/trans that would save money and work.... B16, B18, and H22 are the most common swaps, hope this helps.... by the way kickass vette

any civic(crx) 89+ or integra 90+ would be the easiest. any B or H seires motor will fit in either of those bodies. IMO an 90-93 integra would be best. already has a good motor worth putting money into and has lots of aftermarket support

I'd probably get an EG (1992-1995) Civic hatchback.

Thanks, but as someone suggested below, doing a Honda isn't really my idea. My son has a nice car (2004 Mustang) and he wants to screw up his daily driver re-creating 2 Fast 2 Foolish, so I told him I'd buy something and we could build it together. He never has worked on cars so this will give him an opportunity to learn how to turn wrenches and to see that it ain't as easy as just bolting on a turbo. If I did it with a Chevy or Ford small block, that'd just convince him that he was right in the first place and the Honda could've been done much cheaper and much easier. Plus I'll learn something about rice-rockets. IS there a substitute for cubic inches? It'll be good for both of us.

BTW, thanks for the kind words about my black money-pit too!

BANG! Right on the money. Are you a psychologist or a mind-reader by trade?

What's a "B16, B18, or H22"? I assume they're differnet year engines, yes? All 4-bangers. Any of those VTEC's?
