me and my cousin had a talk about stuff the other day and he ended up talking about cars. he told me that all VW cars come with turbo engines and that there's no other car that we can afford that's better than a Jetta because of that.
then we went on and i told him you can supercharge your engine.
i just wanted to know about how much does that cost and is a supercharged engine better than a turbo engine.
turbo = can create more power yet it must spool first
Super = can create good amounts of instantanious power
VW makes a 1.8T beetle. They make a lot of their cars in both turbo and non-turbo. I think that the passat, phaeton and tourag are the only models they dont offer a turbo for.
Also, most engines are supercharge-able, but most companies dont make chargers for them.
The best way to find out how to supercharge your car...go to the supercharger forum.

edit: an s/c is basically an air compressor (like those airtanks used for air tools). it's powered by your engine thru some belts (which causes some parasitic power losses). since there's more air, you get more power. its a little more complicated than that, but there's the basic idea

thanks for helping me make him feel very stupid. and also giving me the knowledge. i really am learning very much with SHO.
It's all good brotha. Everyone had to start at point A once before and learn from there. Sometimes it just seems like some of us have forgotten how it was like when we didn't know either.

Turbos will always make more power. Why do you think they are outlawed in the NHRA and superchargers aren't? Especially on small engines like our Honda's have superchargers aren't really a good idea. Changing boost settings is a lot easier than switching out pulleys and all that crap too.
The only new VW's that I know of that come Turbo'd are the Beetle Turbo S, Jetta 1.8T, GTI 1.8T and their TDI line. They have the base 2.0 engines, VR6 Engines etc. So not all VW's are turbo.
And then we go into the Supercharger vs. Turbocharger; it's all preference. Turbo you have the turbo lag, but can make more power out of it, cheaper, easier to turn up the boost. Supercharger has no lag, cost more, have to change the pulleys in order to turn up psi.
Personally I like Turbo better. If you find a proper sized turbo for your car then you can cut down on turbo lag. All depends on how big and what mods you have; my friends WRX w/ VF22 hits full boost (21) psi at 3500RPM which really isn't that bad.
I remember reading an article about how Mercedes is dropping the Superchargers. Reason was because back in the day they the turbo lag was bad and thus they used the superchargers so that the power is always there. But now with all the new technology in turbos and what not they are planning on moving to turbos.
Only company I know of that is big on superchargers is Ford.
Mods: AEM short ram intake, DC Sports Exhaust, H&R loweing springs, MSD ignition wires, 4-2-1 headers
Turbos are better!
Personally i prefer turbos over superchargers. Super chargers do offer instantaneous power but it IS limited by your engines RPMs, you can get more boost by changing the pulleys but there still is that limitation. With turbos, the only limit depends on how big your turbo is. I've also heard that superchargers put more of a beating on your engine than turbos.
