Oil Additives

“Special” (aftermarket) additives for oils (automobiles and engines).

Companies producing automobiles and engines exclusively use oils containing additives. These oils are made of base oil (mineral, semi-synthetic, or fully synthetic) with an addition of oil-soluble chemical components and additives afterwards and therefore have an excellent lubrication qualities like good lubricity, antiwear, extreme pressure, anticorrosion protection, dispersant and cleaning properties, as well as anti-aging and anti-foaming properties, and etc.

Concentration, combination, and formulation of additives MUST be compatible with each other as well as base oil, that’s why final products possess all required necessary qualities and meet all requirements for automobiles and engines.

For the production of high quality oils it is necessary to conduct very expensive and extensive research in the laboratory, tests on dyno stands, and most importantly actual road testing in vehicles to determine the results of additives and the most efficient combination of base oils with additives. That’s why, in our opinion, exclusive purpose of oil industry is to create and supply on the market highest quality oils with a full cooperation and input from automotive industry.

However, again and again car owners are being offered additives which supposed to improve qualities of already existent oils. We will call these additives “special” to distinguish them from standard oil additives used in oil production. These “special” additives might be oil soluble as well as oil insoluble.

After we have determined and approved the composition (structure) of certain oil upon extensive testing, there should be no reason for the customer to modify qualities of the oil. However, this is often done by mixing [I guess they meant adding] “special” additives.

Practice illustrates that customers making assumptions only from their personal experience extremely rarely can detect whenever “special” additives work or not. Base oils can be improved with “special” additives. However, since we approve and recommend oils which already contain additives, there is no reason to use “special” additives.

You have to understand that we do not recommend usage of any “special” additives in our cars and engines because THEY DO NOT PROVIDE ANY IMPROVEMENTS during use, besides they also increase unnecessary financial operational expenses.

Not soluble “special” additives, so called hard additives, are usually based on molybdenum disulphide or graphite. Usage of this kind of “special” additives in turbocharged engines or cars with catalytic converters is ABSOLUTELY PROHIBITED. For engines without converters and without turbochargers we do not have any major worries or concerns if used in manufacturer recommended concentration, hard particles are relatively small and guaranteed their equal distribution throughout the carrier [I think they mean oil ]. Besides, suspension must be very stable and remain so even after extended period of use, otherwise deposits form, some of which clog oil filters.

Rechecking whenever or not “special” additive satisfies above requirements is almost impossible with simple methods. Besides it is absolutely necessary to conduct empirical controlled road tests, which we do not conduct [I think they mean “special” additives, not approved oils]. We also do not see any necessity to use such non-soluble in oil “special” additives. To exclude mistakes and errors during such use we also do not recommend using them in cars without turbochargers and without catalytic neutralizers.

In some units usage of such non-soluble “special” additives is absolutely prohibited such as automatic transmissions, manual transmissions with synchronizers, and limited slip differentials. These units act only under a special power/toque lock conditions which remain valid only if coefficient of friction has not been modified by any additive which reduces friction (MoS2 – molybdenum disulphide, or graphite). The list of approved gear oils and rear end lubes satisfies all the requirements, thus “special” additives are not needed.

“Special” additives using PTFE which, as claimed by manufactures, produce film on friction pairs also should not be used because we can’t exclude possibility of damage from their use.

For the use of “special” additives the driver is always responsible because it might lead to termination of warranty.
Under no circumstances as a result of using “special” additives can drain intervals be extended, any other conditions of oil use can’t be modified either.

If you want better performing oil, buy better oil not additives.
