Exclamation Oil Problem "HELP"!!! "HONDA PEOPLE"

Well my friend has a civic with gsr engine and few mods in it. Past month or two he has been having some bad oil problems. The check oil light would turn on when he'd turn a corner. Also the vtec would not kick in due to the low oil in the engine. So we changed his oil to trying and figure out where the leak is coming from. We put mobil 1 and new plugs. It worked great. After a week he called me saying that the oil was low. Also he had very low coolent and the temperature guage would move up and down a lot. He put new coolent in and it didn't stop. So Finally he took it in last week and they told him that he needed a total rebuild and it would cost more that $3,000. They said that it needed a rebuilt because there was oil in the exhaust. So right now he's wondering if hes being bullshitted or is this true. he does use VTEC a lot. Does VTEC burn oil? JW Anyways i would like your imput.

Sounds to me that the engine has worn piston rings (or even worn out bores/pistons). Which explains why the engine is consuming a whole lot of oil.

If my synopsis is correct, then it doesn't sound like your friend is being scammed at all (the problem, not the money it costs to rebuild - I don't know how much a rebuild "should" cost).

Yeah, my Mom had a Toyota that would burn oil from the
exhaust like crazy, when started cold. What a smoke-screen !
After the engine warmed up, it was okay. I
told her it was the rings, and she replaced them, on her
mechanic's advice, (doesn't trust me ), but it
was fine after that. Had 174,XXX miles on it: '89 Celica GT.
The coolent loss wouldn't go with bad rings, IMO, so
that may be a different problem altogether/unrelated.
How's this bastid drive like ? Also, does it
stop "smoking" when the engine's at operating temps.,
or does it smoke all the time?

Coolant loss could be a blown head gasket. The best giveaway is seeing coolant weeping down the block. & you would probably see a brown mess in the radiator reservoir tank.

hes probably got washed out rings, or its just old and the rings and cylinder walls are all messed up. if you have the resources id dissasmble it and hone out the bores and get new rings and get it mangnafluxed to check for cracks, and also new head gaskect
