I went to the local gemeni to get my oil changed and they said that my power steering was making noise and that I needed to change the power steering pump. Any one know if there just trying to hustle me or if I really need to do it

ford power steering pumps are louder than most engines.....and they're not bad......when it goes bad you'll know it.....i wouldn't worry until the noise was really bothering you or until it wasn't working right...that can be dangerous.....might wanna make sure it's full of fluid, then take the cap off, turn it lock to lock a few times and that might help get air that's in it, out......air in p/s systems make noise bad.......i've taken mine off though....torque steer is a pain in the ass with p/s to me.....easier to control it without p/s

ima check the power steering fluid and do what you suggested when I get up from bed haha (lap top ownz me.) The sound isnt loud I didnt notice it till they told me and only recently have I heard something that sounded like the belts but I just shrugged it off because it was a rainy day
I would just say screw it and take the power steering belt off. It feels better to drive and wont cost you the price of a new pump if you actually need one.
I guess I should clarify that. It seems like you feel the limits of the car better without the power steering. Also, it used to torque steer pretty bad with ps if the roads were wet and I was flooring it. Lastly, which is hard for me to explain, the steering response feels more linear going into a corner. Wih the power steering I would sometimes turn to hard into the corner. I would try to make a minor correction and end up turning harder towards the inside of the corner. How did I do? Does that make any sense?
One area that sucks is Parking. What a bitch. No more palming the steering wheel which is a bad habit anyway.
Once you are moving at a reasonable speed, it isn't that hard to steer the car. But the only area which is a bastard to turn the wheel is what 92bubblesi said: Parking/low speed maneuvering.
You might also check your hoses and see if there all clamped good. Like a month ago i had the same problem. Everytime I turned the wheel it would make this loud squiling noise and I would run low of power stearing fluid. So i would have to buy another bottle to stop the noise. I must bought 10 bottles of power stearing fluid intil I found out the problem. All it was that I didn't tighten up one of the clamps that lead to the power stearing resovior(i guess thats how u spell it) and air was gettin in there and fluid was pouring out. I felt like a jackass when I found out that was the problem. A stupid clamp. :bh
