how i would explain it depends on how much you know about repairing cars.

ok, they hook it up to a brake lathe, and it spins around and 2 little "cutters" (1 on each side) shave thousandths of an inch off (you can choose how much) to make the rotor surface smooth, cut off the lip that frequently occurs on the very outside edge of the rotor. you need to cut/turn your rotors if they are warped, or rough, which you will know they are if your brake pedal vibrates when you push the brakes.

yea, but cutting them is way cheaper. there is a certain point where you cant cut them anymore, or the rotor will colapse when you hit the brakes (porbably at the most important time, during a painc stop or something) so when he hits the minimum thickness, then he should go with slotted, and SS lines, mabye even calipers.

the rotor is worn in by the old pads. so when u put new pads on u want a smooth straight surface on the rotors for the pads to make contact on. if its warped it could cause braking vibrations
