Mods: not much - rims, intake, exhaust tips, clear sidemarkers and turns, 25 LED fogs
Great write up! As a 2x industrial design graduate and a future car designer, I whole-heartedly agree with your assesment of lower-end car design and performance attributes.

Mods: Determined to bring home the car that finally put a smile on my face like no other has...
I had recently learned about cost cutting and such in my management classes but I did learn about compression ratio and turboing today
If anything... it's better the way cars are currently built. The idea of buying a car that's track ready or already hooked up bothers me. I would rather be able to decide for myself how low I want my car or how stiff I want my suspension or whatever.
I just wish you could buy stripped down versions of new cars... no sense in paying for a factory cd player when you're gonna swap it out anyways. Let the factory save on paper speakers so that I can get aftermarket speakers.... joo know?
ya, i know what you mean, cars that are modded/tuned to the max outta the factory would be cool in theory, but then the fun would be gone somewhat. at least for myself. If every part of a car was top of the line performing, there would be no room for improvement.
yeh im going to school for automotive and everyone ive talked to has come up with a similar thought process.
cheaper, lighter, faster. for the most part car manufactues only car about how cheap the car is to build how light the car is for fuel mileage and how fast they can produce it.
look at gm they have know issues with there production but its cheaper for them to keep going building it and just warrenty the parts later after the customer buys the car.
just on example and i am whole heartedly behind that idea of not factory tune simply for the fact that everybody has there own taste and i see a car as a machine just as much as i see it as a canvas. good write up

i agree 100%. Perfect example of walmart syndrome. Everyone wants something for as cheap as possible, and doesn't care about quality, or how it effects our economy(in terms of jobs). My gf's mom is shopping for a car. She was bitching how everything about cars are too expensive, fuel, maintanence, the actual car purchase, insurance, etc. I had to bite my toungue so hard not to call her an idiot. There is an easy explantion to each of these.
fuel- well this one IS kinda ridiculous, its the oil crooks. fuel doesn't need to be so pricey, but they know eventually there will be no use for it (down the road of course, but with hydrogen cars, etc), so they are guaging(sp?) us as much as possible now. just MO.
maintanence- well if you don't do this, your car will eventually die, and workers need to be paid, and cars are getting more complicated. One may not pay for the specific repair, but the knowledge of the mechanic.
cost of car- well this is a no brainer. A fully loaded mazda3 just under 30k (can$) with tax seems okay
insurance- well if we didn't have so many frivilous law suits from morons trying to make a quick buck, insurance probably wouldnt be so high. When you have people that were barely bumped sueing for 1.6mil, thats when you know there is a problem.
Just my opinions, and perfect example of stupid people not actually thinking.
