Buddy f*cked up motor...
Ok... so my buddy fucked his motor up. He has a 91 Hatch with a Y8 swap, but he running the original SI ECU. The guys who did the swap were Neon boys and they ran the vtec selonoid to a toggle switch inside the car... didnt do anything with the oil pressure switch, and the ECU isn't chipped to run vtec. I told him not to turn that switch on because he didnt have a ECU for it but he didnt listen. He's constantly in the gas, and keeps using the switch. Well he was on the freeway, once he flipped the switch it started getting a ticking/squeeling noise in the head. Knowing him he slowed down and tried it again so he probably made it worse whatever it is. But the car is sitting about 1hr away from home now, it still runs but they parked it for now.
Anyone have any ideas? I guess I dont know what would have happened but I have a feeling it has something to do with trying to run vtec on a non-vtec ECU...?

Well... he checked thigns out... I guess 2 of the rocker arms wiggle back and forth more than they should... now I dont know exactly which ones or how bad cuz I havent looked at them, but this is what he said. I think that they are just for valves that are closed and he doesnt realize that they will move a little bit... I dont know why anything would have happened to them though unless low oil pressure could have caused the pins that engage the vtec rocker to not move far enough and break? I dunno. Since he isnt using a vtec ECU the then the ECU wont stop the vtec from engaging if oil pressure is low... meh.

thats just one of the dumbest things i've ever heard of.
the closed valves rocker arms do have some play up and down and side to side.
tell him to take it to a real shop and have them take care of it. so he doesn;t screw it up more.
detonation is a bitch. the engine is screwed(or will be shortly) and hes an idiot that all there is to it. well he may have just heard the detonation and thought something was a little off. so is there something actually wrong with the engine or you think there is? if it still runs have him drive it home without doing anything stupid. the base maps should be close enough for him to drive around without any problems if he doesn't engage vtec

aren't the injectors for that year much smaller than they are on the y8....they should be 250cc on the y8.
