Cant get axles out, need motor out!
So... has anyone pulled an engine without removing the axles? I cant get the ball joints to release on either side, so I was thinking I would just try and leave the tranny in the car and pull the motor, I've left tranny's in place before but I didn't have the axles still in place... can it be done?

Try using a pry bar to pop the axles out of the tranny, it has always worked for me.

Do they have something online like a manual that shows you how to pull an engine? All I know is that you start with the Shift-linkage.

I put a jack under the control arm, and jack it up. Then place a bar in the little space between the control arm and the knuckle. Then slowly lower the jack. The pressure from the shock/spring pushing down causes the ball joint to pop out without damaging the ball joint or the boot.

You don't even need to take the ball joints out, although it makes it easier. And then only the top one which is way easier to get loose. Just get the nut off and whack the top of the knuckle a few times real good with a hammer and it will jump right out.

for balljoints I like to do this, jack the car up and put it on stands both sides. loosen the balljoint nut, jack the car up by the hub untill the car just barely comes off the stand.(2000+lbs of pressure) then take a hammer and smack the lower a-arm, usualy just takes 1 or two well placed wacks.
I think pickleforks are gay never used them. all you need is a bigger hammer .
good luck with the swap man! Im in the middle of one as well along with a full suspension rebuild hahaha.

i don't understand why you need the axles out to pull the motor. i leave the trans in unless it's getting replaced also.
i shock the ball joint out of the lower control arm. you have to have good aim and strike the lower control arm where the ball joint goes into it. you have to know how to hit it though, otherwise you'll just start denting the arm. hit it like you properly hit with a sledge hammer, if you know how. it takes 2-3 hits and doesn't leave a mark.

Ok seriously people read dates of posts and check to see if things have been solved before replying... I keep getting replies about this and I got them a couple days after I posted this... but thanks for trying to help non-the-less.
As far as why am I pulling the trans... it's a whole hella lot easier to pull everything versus trying to get the trans and shaft lined up and together when in the car... not only that, but original plan was to swap to a 5spd out of a 5th gen, but that plan has changed due to not having the cable-hydro bracket yet. Now I'm looking for a SI trans for it instead.
