Is there a real differece in transmissions between the CX and DX Civics. I need a 5 speed for my CX since it pops out of every gear almost. I'm not looking for performance, it's more of a fuel economy daily driver/commuter. I found a DX tranny for 50 bucks. Is it a direct replacment???
You might want to consider looking for an ex tranny and maybe swapping to a lower 5th gear. You get better acceleration, but still have a long gear to cruise in on the highway.
make sure that theres no metal shavings inside of your tranny, which will in turn chew up seals and leak oil onto your clutch, which will in turn cause your starter to sometimes act funny. not ALWAYS, but its happened, so you'd might as well check everything over while your trannys out
The CX tranny has a final drive of something like 3.75 and DX tranny has 4.025 I believe.
I have a 95 DX hatch and 93 CX hatch and the DX will out pull the CX any day. When you hit a hill in the CX, you have to go back to 4th.
Of course the CX also has about 70-75 hp and the DX is 105 hp I think.
But, I can get about 47 mpg on the road in the CX and about 41 in the DX.

please explain in detail your infinite wisdom on how oil leaking on your clutch, causes a starter to go bad?
#1 transmissions that pop out of gear or are hard to get into gear are symptoms of bad syncros.
#2 those are some really big shavings if they chew up the oil seal around the shaft. err wrong, syncros will not produce big enough shavings to chew up the oil seal around the shaft. if you have big shavings you chewed through a gear and you need a new tranny anyways.
#3 why would he want to put a bad transmission that wore out the syncros back on the car? let alone check it for metal shavings when hes already replacing the tranny?

definely agree my vx has the same trans and is a pooch going up hills but gets great gas mileage and also agree with litlblckcivic the syncros are shot nothing to do with shavings but he will have to check the flywheel and replace clutch making sure the flywheel wasn't damaged
