D16Y7 Turboed / Tuned w/ Crome
My friends and I just finished Turboing and tuning my friends 96' DX Civic; about 3 weeks ago. Last week my friend totaled it. We went to check out the car in the salvage yard, and the only things that were damaged was the intercooler, radiator, intercooler piping, and down pipe and everything in front of that. The engine, tranny, turbonetics turbo, Blitz BOV, and Mandiford are all in perfect condition. The turbo and maniford are 3 weeks old and the engine and tranny have 80,000 miles on them.
I have a 95' Civic DX hatchback w/ 209,000miles w/ bad rings and horrible gas millege. I am in need of an engine swap badly.
The insurance company asked if my friend wants to buy back the car, they said it's worth $2,300.00
Do you think it's worth buying back and swapping his setup into my car?
I wouldn't do it. You could buy/refresh a d16z6 and boost it for about the same money. It would also keep your setup simpler staying obd1 and you can run a chipped p28.

Oh, he couldn't figure out how to tune w/ OBD II so he converted it back to OBD I. So I don't have to worry about that.
Where did they get $2300? What was the damage like? The engine and turbo parts maybe worth 800 bucks at a junk yard. So what I would do is tell him not to buy it back and figure out which salvage yard it is going to and buy just the engine from them. Not sure if that is what the insurance companies do. I'm sure on an expensive car like a 911 or M3, the insurance company would part it out because they know they can get decent money for the parts......not a 10 year old civic....and they don't car that it was turbo.

Well the car was in mint condition before he went and smashed it all up. Well the engine and tranny might be worth $600 at a Junk Yard, but you don't really know what you're getting, where as here I know exactly what I'm getting. The Turbo alone is worth $300 and the maniford is worth a lot to, I wish I had pictures to show you. I'm going to try and go up there tomorrow and take pictures of it.

We took off most of the aftermarket bult on stuff so far, but the insurance company already seezed the car, but i have until Monday to decide if I'm going to buy it off my friend.
no, you can get any aftermarket parts that are on the car off to put back to stock. even if they have it sitting at the junkyard. unless they already gave him the money its not theres

Well, I haven't talked with my friend yet, cause he hasn't been picking up his phone. But I talked with some friends of mine, and they said that it would be too big of a deal to flat bed the car to my house and then strip it of just the motor, Tranny, and Turbo, and some of the accesorys, cause thats all I'm going to use. They said I could get a better motor from a junk yard for around $500-$700 w/tranny and ecu and wiring. And then go back and peice together my own style turbo kit for under $1000. I would have to tune it some how, but that could be figured out later.
