d16y8 questions

Well just to get it out .. i'm new to honda and i'm young(17). I'm just here to learn and the only way you can do that is by getting help and tryin things.

But first i was just wondering if ALL d16y8 motors 96+ civic ex's are all sohc vtec. I had someone tell me my d16y8 civic(auto) 00 ex was not a sohc vtec.. and i thought all exs 96 and after were all sohc vtec. I'm pretty sure im right but i just wanna make certain.

Then also I've been having this problem with my IACV. I cleaned out my trottle body and everything. I checked for vac leaks and came up with nothing. I also checked the coolant to see how it was and it was about empty in the reserve. so i added some up to the max line.
I understand on the d16y8(auto) that the IACV in built in the trottle body? I've been trying to clean the IACV out but it is no where to be found? Is there any pictures of where it would be on a d16y8(auto)? or if anyone can give me any advice that i could try. when i start the car up it jumps up to 3000 rpm but then settles down to 1500 when engine is warm. when i put it in drive it goes down to about 1000. i also got a CEL for code 14(IACV). I was also wondering if my cat could be throwing this code? or even the sensor in the cat? My cat is pretty much gone the rattling is terrible but before i replace it i wanna fix this IACV problem. Any advice or tips?

Also i know there might be another thread for this IACV problem i've looked on this forum for a couple days. If anyone could point me the right direction i'd appreciate it

And to add...some say VTEC and some don't but EX (y8) are vtec.

thanks alot guys.. yeah thats what confused me mine dont say vtec so i wasnt sure. and to add.. i pulled off the ground today to reset the check light to see if it would come back on and it didn't so far.. i went to get gas and came back home.. no CEL. but i have reset the light before and it did come back on.. and the idle is still pretty high in park around 1500 =\ idk if the coolant helped any or not maybe thats why theres no CEL. but i still experience the backfire in the exhaust and i noticed a difference in excelation from 0 to about 20 it takes forever. could that be because my cat is bad? the rattle is pretty bad and i know it prob wont even pass emissions. i've just been waiting to fix the idle problem and CEL.

anyone got any other ideas? thanks

CEL again.. i decided to go down and let the car idle for a couple mins.. idk i still think its my cat.. when it rattles really bad thats when the CEL comes on. but idk why it would be code 14 IACV. but i had to replace the car anyway so im just gonna buy on and put it on.

more to add haha.. and then today i was driving and decided to turn on the a/c and the car also stalled out.. the rpms dropped to like 100. i'm thinking it may be the a/c compressor now? maybe theres a vac leak around there some where? any other advice?

I wondered the same thing... I also have a d16y8 (2000 EX - Si here in Canada) and it's an automatic.

I've seen photos on other forums that say as long as you have the following vtec solenoid (then you have a SOHC vtec):

http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...civic/vtec.jpg

My engine definitely has this solenoid.... but after looking at other pics of 2000 EX's (with a d16y8 engine) I also noticed their engines also had the head/cover with the writing "VTEC" or "Honda" like the following pics:

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w...0/IMGP0217.jpg
and
http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t...ictures016.jpg

My engine doesn't have this..... does this mean I don't have a VTEC? And what is this part? (I'm new to honda engines)...

Thanks guys.

Look on the timing belt cover or the side of the block. If it is in fact a D16y8, then you have VTEC regardless of if the valve cover says it or not.

I don't think that any 96-00 civic had a valve cover that had 'vtec' on it. Only the 92-95 had that. Some people swap them. My 98ex (d16y8) does not have vtec on the valve cover. If the engine code is d16y8 or d16z6 then the motor is vtec. If the engine code is d15z1 or d16y5 then the motor is vtec-e (economy version for fuel efficiency, not power).

the 99-2000 ex's had the VTEC writing on the cover i think. the actually changed a whole lot in those two years, even though they're almost identical. BD is right, if you have a 96-00 ex, you have VTEC.

you can also look next to the dizzy and you should see the vtec solenoid

Ive been having a similar problem...

from what i can see the idle is just that way, its a bit high in neutral but once in gear drops...
if the rattling is comming from under your car then its your cat.
my problems was a p0420. so i replaced the cat. CEL came back on, so i replace the o2 sensor that goes into cat. CEL came back on, so i took off the header and sprayed inside with degreaser took off the cat, sprayed that with degreaser, and took a steel wire brush to my exhaust ports. and wipped both o2s off clean, and then used presurized air to blast any loose dirt out. I am about to change my ECT and coolant too, and if that dont work then im going to do the o2 non fouler trick or put my stock cat back on as i have degreased the inside of that tooo...

your problem sounds like a vac leak to me... check the cruise control line to the back of the intake manifold. had the same prob as you when it was disconnected, when i tried to use ac and/or cruise i would bog and almost stall. unless the rattling noise is coming from the engine bay then it could your ac compressor

Just to clarify, it depends where the vehicle was sold, or was intended to be sold. All 96-00 Civic EX models sold in Canada came with the 106hp non-vtec D16Y7. 96-00 Civic Si models sold in Canada came with the 127hp D16Y8, and then the Candian Civic SiR models were the 160hp USDM Si.

The more you know...

well i actually did fix my CEL. i screwed the idle screw in the whole way until it was tight. it came on again after that but i reset it and it hasnt came on since. there was also a blown glasket and timing was off. everything is good except cat. which will get replaced. but the idle screw was the big change i made for the CEL and it seemed to work so far.
