help me

i need to know if its normal with a 90 civic 1.5 motor to suddenly go from 35 mile per gallon to 20mpg just from messing with the catalytic convertor, the thing is hollowed out??????????????any info would be great. i was told these motors require a certain amount of back pressure to work right, is this true??

the car is OBD0 right? so no secondary o2 is there so halowing the cat will mean shit to the ECU.

its definetly something else. also no need to make multy threds lol.

THANKS GUYS, I WASNT GETTING NO RESPONSES TO MY POST SO I REPOSTED IT A FEW TIMES, SORRY,ANYHOW IM A NEW IDIOT ON HERE AND DONT KNOW COMPLETELY HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS EVEN THOUGH I READ STUFF.
I DIDNT THINK IT WAS THE CAT, I HADNT CALCULATED MY GAS MILAGE IN A WHILE, BUT ALL I HAVE IS A 4DR CIVIC (90) WITH A 16VALVE 1.5L MOTOR, I GEUSS THATS A D15 MOTOR?? IT HAS ALOTA MILES ON IT..260K RUNS GOOD, SEEMS SLUGGISH, THE CAR IS SLOW, BUT IM TOLD THATS NORMAL FOR THAT MOTOR AND CAR. I HAVE A NEW CLUTCH, RAM AIR, NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH COLD AIR, NO CAT AN A CHEAP RACE MUFFLER THATS JUST 2.5" SIZE WELDED ONTO THE STOCK PIPE STARTING FROM THE BACK PASSENGER SIDE WHEEL.SO I DONT EXPECT IT TO GO FAST,BUT THOUGHT I WAS GETTING GOOD GAS MILED TILL I CALCULATED IT THE OTHER DAY. I DONT WANN DRIVE A SLOW CAR THAT GETS 20MPG!! BECAUSE I CAN DRIVE MY OTHER CAR AND GO FAST ANG GET 15MPG.
I LIVE BY A PLACE THAT SELLS JDM MOTORS FOR AROUND 600, WHAT IS GOOD MOTOR TO PUT IN THIS CAR THAT WILL GET UP?I WAS TOLD A ZC MOTOR. LET ME KNOW.

hard to say why its gone from 30-20mpg w/o really knowing the car....try reseting the ecu by taking the neg. cable loose from the battery for a good 30-45mins and then go from there. also your driving style might have partly to do with it. 260k is alot of miles though.

HOW DO U READ CODES ON THE CAR???I VAGUELY HEARD ABOUT THE FLASHING LIGHT UNDER THE PASSENGER SIDE ON THE ECU, BUT I DONT REALLY KNOW HOW TO MAKE IT DISLAY A CODE OR WHAT THE NUMBER OF FLASHES WOULD MEAN ANY WAY

on OBD 0 (what you have) it should be flashing if you have a code. Long flashes = incriments of 10 / short flashes = increments of 1.

For example

Long Long Short = code 21...then you pick up your helms or haynes or whatever manual you have or look it up on the internet and see what the code is for.

plugs oily=rings gone

260k is ALOT of miles, it needs a rebuild.

it would be a VERY fast car if you droped in the JDM d15B. its like your engine BUT it has a better r/s ratio and is extremley rev happy. Its an awesome base for anything you want to do to it. it also has 3 stage vtec, below 2500rpm it only has 1 intake valve per cylinder, les air and less gas= AWESOME mpg.

but at about 5200rpm you have a high cam too for a nice broad flat tq curve.

from the net a JDM d15b can be had for 550. tht tranny ecu, WHOLE motor and les then 50k on it
