Kinda a noob question

I downloaded romediter v4 from hondata and was playing around with it...
I started playing with the timing table and thought to myself "how can I advance and retard timing with an ecu and a aftermarket cam gear? one being computerized and one being mechanical"

can anyone clear this up for me? and on a side note what is a safe amount to advance and retard timing?

the ecu will affect the ignition timing and the cam gear would adjust the position of the valves from TDC.

the cam gear wouldn't be worth it though. the ignition timing would be more effective in tuning.

not sure on how much would be the limit of how much to adjust it safely would be
