need a few tips on a rebuild d16y7sohc non vtec

hello all you honda lovers, warm greetings to you all, i will get to the point i am looking to get my civic engine rebuild but dont know what else to expect to do with it to get as much hp out of it without spending a fortune , i got a set of high comp. pistons .40 oversize, full gasket set, set of main and rod bearings ,water pump timing belt kit, i was asking around and someone told me to get the block notch?? and to get the oil pump ported out so it would have a better supply of oil to where it need it most, but have no idea what else to do while i got it apart, what are the gains of having the heads ground and ported and polished?? should i get the crank lightened and balance too? well any tips would be helpful, thanks again and keep the hondas in front of the rest, cause next to sex i love my honda best!!! :clap

yea thats seems like a pretty good setup, no need to notch since you are using the stock rods. as for the oilpump the y8 or y7 do have a slow volume oil pump which has been known to not suppply enough oil at times and cause spun rod bearings.

while it is apart I would use ARP headstuds and main studs. just to beef it up a touch.Mabby you could use a thiner metal headgasket to bump the compresion up a tad.
