New to the D series game

I recently purchased a 91 CRX si with a motor that burns oil kinda bad.

I plan on just swapping motors rather than rebuilding the current one. The guy who's selling me the car has a freind of his that has a JDM D15B VTEC, think some ppl call it the mini-me or something? for sale for $300.

Deal or no deal?

I know I'm going to need a VTEC ECU of some sort as the stock Si box won't cut it, but are there any other snags dropping this in? I can't think of any.

If this isnt a good choice, I can find another d series I am sure, I just need it to be economical and run well, this car will be my daily, not a race car or anything.

this motor is a stock vtec jdm civic motor (92-95) so its not rly a mini me..you can use any vtec ecu...plug n play pretty much.. i think that motor is obd1 though so youll need a conversion harness

Shouldn't the CRX already be OBD 1? I don't think I'll have to convert anything there.

no, general rule. 88-91 Obd0. 92-95 Obd1. 96+ obd2.

Obd1 and Obd0 are not the same. i think you can go to a site called rywire.com or something and they sell conversion harnesses.

Im not all that savy on hondas yet, but I think you will need a P28 ecu to run vtec?

Also I think d16z6's can be found for Around that price also?

This isnt a go-fast yet, I just want something to get me some good MPG's and that is cheap. B swap and the like are out.

As for the ECU, Any VTEC ECU should work to my knowledge but the p72's and B16 ECU's will make it run rich as fuck from what I read.

the d17 isnt a bad engine... the 7th gen isnt that great of a car, but the engine isnt bad... just cuz its newer than a d16 and people havnt been modding them for 10 years doesn't mean they arent good.

my D17A2

also, a B series gets pretty good mileage... like... 30 something i do believe.

check this guys 7th gen... he swapped to a D17A2 and it took off from there

umm that car came stock with a d17........
actually it's the worst of the FI d-series since it has the least aftermerket support. and why would you pay the extra money for .1 liters and worse support? not that's bad but the i'd take the d16 over it. but a t3/t4 57 trim on any motor will make power.

it's more expensive and makes teh same power with less aftermarket than a d16. a bigger aftermarket means you have a broader section of replacement parts to choose from which give you different pricing options. it's just not worht the money. he'd be better off getting a used b18b.
