New Engine
Hey I'm fairly new to the whole Performance Upgrade part of a car. I was just wondering, I have a 97 Civic LX four door, SOHC motor, which I'm guessing only pushes like 110 hp stock. I do have an AEM Intake and new headers, but I was wondering, if I decided to get a new engine, what's the best possibility or engine to get? I am looking to get at least above 150 in hp, would a turbo kit do the trick? or what else should I upgrade? I would really appreciate any advice or help you can give me. By the way, this may sound kind of bad but I don't even know what type of engine I have. I believe it's d16? Is there somewhere I could find out? Thanks again if any one can help...

a turbo kit would easily make it to 150 hp. and with minimal tuning effort, still needs to be tuned so nothing blows.
some fast things: you have the intake, and header (which btw your running without a cat unless you had one welded in), exhaust, and i'd swap the y7 intake manifold to the y8 (ex). that would complete the breathing mods.
but if you turbo, the header was a waste. you can DIY a turbo for less than 2000 if you shop right. and be very happy.

alright sweet thanks. do u know if it's hard to install a turbo kit? or does it require a lot of time and everything. I already got an exhaust system that goes from the cat all the way back. And could I tune the turbo myself or would it be better to have professionals do it? Thanks for your help I appreciate it.

The cheapest direct swap with at least 150hp is the B16, but as stated for the same money you can have alot more power. A well put together turbo kit tuned by someone who knows what they're doing can lay down 200hp in your D-series. Something to consider. If you aren't quite sure even what engine you have, you definitely don't have the know-how to tune it.
But yeah if you turbo the header was a waste. If you're not sure of your direction, always better to ask advice before you start spending money.

thanks, well the headers i got from my friend for free so i didnt spend no money on those. Thats' the good thing. Well there is a turbo shop around where I'm at so I'm sure they would be able to tune it. Thanks for your help I appreciate it.

The Right Stuff....
I recommend that you get a notebook, take notes and do some research. This will help you a lot in the long run. There are little odd-end catches in doing a motor swap or turbo out your Civic. I have a notebook fill with information, articles, DIY, and cost regarding motor swap. Believe me it helps a lot to sort out the BULLSHIT from the TRUTH.

yuor not making that power with just those mods unless that dyno read really really high or it was a spike.
a bigger HG to bump up the compression? but thats just the opposite of what you want for more CR. a y8 gasket with the middle layer is thinner(smaller) and nets more compression.
I call BS on the power you stated and the fact that you didnt know about the HG just reinforces this. I love the sohc engine and am building one myself but no way in hell did you make 151 with a cam and boltons at less then 10:1cr

Hey speedjunky01
I keep forgetting to ask you about those rear control arms on your Civic. How are they working out for you right now?

cam gear advanced shifts the power LOWER inthe rpm band. having it retarded would give you better peak numbers.
p&p head will gain little power.
still calling bull shit until I see dyno sheet.

uuum yea it can on a "built" head and about 13:1 CR
there is no way in HELL you have 20 less whp and a 3 point difference in compression.
hey if you have a dynosheet of your car ill freaking bow down to you.
and that cuz thing is just proof its BS, "my uncles daddy's sisters moms brothers motor has that and its fast"
cant spell it any louder BULL SHIT

im telling u that it will make that much power and im at 140whp just because the more u advance the gear the more fuel it needs and stock injectors max out quick and if i can find the dyno sheet il prove it its been done over two years since its beeen tuned so im sure 150whp isint that much of a problam , but what would u think bigger injector advance thecama bitmore better gas and a50shot what would that yeild me . I m not tryin to fight ive been on this sight for way to long too start dumb arguments . arent u building a jdm d15?
