Quick noob question....D16y8
I have a 1997 Ex. I was wondering, to be a VTECH, does it have to SAY VTECH?
Because Ivebeen looking around, and a lot of 97 Ex's have VTECH's....and mine has no badge or anything....jw.
Thanks.

Do you think it'd be worth it to build up another one to drop in?

no biggie... I type vtech all the time... I knew about vtech phones way before I knew about vtec...
96-00 civics don't have vtec written anywhere on them with the exception of the 99-00si which had a "dohc vtec" sticker on the side.
All EX model civics have the performance oriented vtec.
As for getting another motor to build on the side. Yes, that is a good plan, but hold off on doing so. Research and make sure that a d16 motor is what you want to put your efforts into. You may want to go with a b18b.
Right now the best thing you could do is just start reading and figuring out what some options are. If you ask questions like "what should I do", everyone will have their own opinion and you might not get useful input.

I dont think an engine that has been around for half a century is a bad engine, its proven itself in many ways,

Would a B18b turbo be better than an all motor K20?
As in instilation, cost etc.
Btw, I knew it was VTEC, I'm not the best of spellers somtimes..

a k20 swap making 200-220whp easily tops out at $10k. with $10k into a boosted b18b you're looking at 500-600whp.

10K into a b18b is going to be that 500-600 whp on 1/2 that, and the other half into getting traction.
my 350hp b18b build is going to ring up to right around $2500-3500

"better" is a relative term. I'd only recommend a k-series swap under the following conditions :
1. You must remain N/A
2. You must have OEM reliability
3. You need a 6spd tranny
Aside from that, you could accomplish the same thing with a b-series for $5-8k less money.

it sounds like your on the right track, a B18b built and boosted would be a good way to go, although a b18c would be a hell of a lot better. im kinda partical though cause im an all motor guy. i find an all motor build to be a lot cleaner and more reliable. but either way you gotta have a pretty good tune if your gonna last very long
