Which route for a build
Sort of long, main question is in third paragraph if you want to cheat....
My question is, I want more power and I am on a budget, so what is the best route to go. I researched and can't find a straight answer. I am looking for people with experience. What I learned so far, please correct if wrong:
*LSVtec very expensive to be somewhat reliable.
*B20,heard they can't rev too high becuase of thin cylinder walls and they should be resleeved for high hp.
*H22 a lot of money to swap in and I read that the weight thing is bullshit, it's only like 200lbs more.
*Mini me only give you 24hp or so
I am thinking about a B18B or turbo D16. Should I get an Ex (D16Y8) and turbo it or get my hands on a B18B (I want the OBD2 so I don't have to deal with emissions headaches) and then eventually turbo it? Either way, I will make a homeade turbo. I plan on swapping this shit in myself (to learn). I have about a grand now and will get a couple hundred a month to build this. This is a second car and I would like it to be a daily driver (reliable), but if something was to happen, I have a hyundai as backup.
What about a tranny for the B18,is the B16 tranny ok, B18C1 ok, etc? I know the Ls has long gears and some applications it's not good for.
On a Budget, looking for best power....Turbo D16 or B18b and then eventually turbo . THIS IS FOR A 97 Cx
I don't want to hear search, because I have been searching for days and can't seem to get a straight answer. If you want to be a dick, then please do it fast and hook me up with a link and close the thread.
Thanks a lot.

I'd go with the turbo d route. No better power for the money invested.

I've been reading about these, but which engine to boost the D16Y8, mini me, etc. And what numbers (HP) is one to expect with these setups? What about the B18B that would be turbo'd? I can't find straight answers and it's driving me nuts!!

those guys super flame for not using the search button so i wouldn't reccomend ever asking anything just look around. some of those guys are well above 400whp, but it's pretty easy to get 250/300 out of a d16. some of them go with the z head and some stick with the y8, but i don't think it matters too much if you're rebuilding it anyways and you're just going for average hp. might as well save money wherever you can.

Yeah, I came across that site and have been snooping in the shadows . I don't like joining other forums becuase my heart belongs to SHO.
My main concern is I don't want to start building the D and then plateau for HP. I want or would like to start with a good base D or B (this is why I am asking) and then keep building.
So from the few responses, it looks like the mini me is out and I should get my hands on an Ex (D16Y8) and build off of that?
What are your feeling on a boosted B18B?

If you have a D than I'd stick with in and build it a little and then turbo it. I was planning on doing that, but I don't have any money. But you should look at this site, they were recommended to me from someone on SHO.

a b18 is going to be initially more expensive to swap it in, but same amount of money spent on both, b18 and d16, the b18 will have more power and torque.
do what you can afford.

stick with the d. if u have around $1500 you can boost it easy.
get tuner toy rods and some vitara pistons and that will handle 400hp for under $500. then go to homemmadeturbo.com and they will show you how to build a custom turbo kit for a $1500 or less.

Yup, what ^^^^he said. But don't go for more than 250 hp without more internal mods than that. You have a CX. A mini me head swap isn't really necessary if you're boosting. I would really recomend against it cause it'd raise you're compression and that'd go against the whole turbo thing.

I am stoked! This is the info I was looking for. I am going to look into doing a compression test (myself). The engine has 118K and original clutch. I will replace the clutch and then do the pistons and rod thing (lol) and then turbo that biatch. I would like to aim for 300hp but not limit myself. I would like to pull 13's. This is not going to be a track car, it will be my little daily driver (but I have another car when this is being worked on) that I want people to laugh at until I lay on it.
I use to get F'ed with with the Si from the big trucks until I punched it!!!!!
god I miss my 8000 redline and Vtec.
