Cools the intake charge, acts as an artificial octane booster making the gas harder to ignite thus keeping detonation at bay and allowing for more boost/advance, it also helps reduce buildup on the valves/pistons. It can be water, alcohol, methanol, not straight meth or alky though, it tends to eat some seals. I run straight water injection unless the temps get too low then I'll add some denatured alcohol to the mix as anti freeze.
My water injection/CA91 pisswater map runs a little less timing but a little more boost than my 100 octane map, and my 100 octane water has more boost and timing
I've been able to eek out about 10% more power on each of the maps using water injection, cheapest bang for the buck on my whole car.

Some Previous Rides: 91 3G Lude Built H23 with T3/T04e, 88 Guards Red 930 Turbo Slantnose(AKA the ticket magnet), 53 Bel Air 502 with an 8-71 and juice. Quite a few others, but not enough room. Oh an 01 V6 Accord too, probably how I got that funny title.
