boost controller assistance!
im lookin at a few boost controllers for my setup but im not sure what to go with.
heres what i want: 2 setting, high and low boost, lcd display, no switches or junk.
thats all really, just something simple but effective. also, i was thinking about this and it kind of stumped me... if the bost controller is controlling the boost... what alters the fuel mix to go a long with the higher/lower boost? do i need a vafc as well as the boost controller?
and lastly, should i go with getting the apexi turbo timer... its a fairly low power setup so do you think i still need it? for $105 i may just throw it in to be safe.
quick replies would be really appreciated since i need a final ammount to work withh by the end of the week so i can get on the phone and order some stuff.

Yes u need some sort of engine management to go with it. Boost controller has nothing to do with engine management.
That said.....i use the greddy profec b spec 2 with the optional remote. U can mount the remote on the steering wheel so u can easily switch to high boost. One of the best on the market in my opinion.

Really? I hate mine. I have toyed with it for oh so long, and no matter what I do, anytime I raise the boost it won't hold a steady amount.

it works well for me.....i just hate that u cant just dial in the exact amount of boost in psi ....u have to do it in % terms.

im already going to be running a chipped p28 with neptune for engine management. what i dont get is when you raise the boost, wont engine lean out badly unless the fue is also raised?

I hated my Spec2 also. I was gonna burn it when I had the car, but kept it in for looks. lol
All boost controllers are like that in % though from what I have seen.
Im tempted to get that new Blitz unit one of these days.
Anyway on the tuning thing. When you tune you tune to certain boost levels. So when you run low boost you are tuned and switch to hi boost it will hit the higher maps and still be tuned.
Dunno if that makes sense, but its easier to look at a standalone Fuel map screen to see what Im talking about. Ill see if I can find anything

so basically what your saying is the ecu will alre3ady have the maps so that if i was just driving with low boost, say 3psi, and im like holy shit a mustang!!! and turn it to high boost at 8psi, the ecu will automatically detect the higher airflow and then change maps? or am i gonna need to get an afc as well. i was looking at the apexi avc-r and the vafc but i want sure if i need to run both. but a boost controller is 100% for sure

Yes ur basically right....but u dont need a vafc if u have a neptune system.

cool, i dont want to buy a vafc.
and all i can speculate is that ill be running about 3psi low boost, and 8psi on high. im hoping to make about 230hp on the first setup, eventually i want to push the 300hp mark, but of course with forged internals etc...

You cant run a lower boost setting than what the wastegate spring is set to. Usuall 7psi is what you get with a tial WG. So you would be running 7psi all the time and then when you want more boost you use a boost controller which will keep the WG closed until it reaches the specified boost level.
So basicly if you wanted to only run 8psi you dont even need a boost controller.
Im not running one at the moment but I have one in the box. I used to have a profecB spec 2 but I heard it was a bitch to program so I sold it and got a turbosmart manual boost controller which is a single stage for 180bux. When the switch is off you run whatever your wastegate is set to. In my case 7psi and when you flip the switch you get whatever boost you set the dial to.
I would suggest you skip buying a boost controller. 7psi off the waste gate will be hella more power than you got now and its a stock motor so you dont need to be boosting the crap out of it.

ahh crap i completely forgot about that. i was thinking that 7psi was the limit.
i wasnt looking to make more than 7-8psi, i wanted to make a lot less. is there any way the boost controller can open the wastegate early?
if not, then 7psi is fine. i guess ill just wait til the next build to get a bigger spring. mainly wanted to do this to keep my engine in good condition and get low gas mileage when im not really in need of high boost. although, i think tial make a wastegate spring for like 5psi. id probably be better getting that and then tuning for two boost maps, starting at 5psi
either way, i sitll need to know which is a good boost controller that i wont have to upgrade and whether or not i hsould get a turbo timner

You cannot set the boost lower than the rate of the wastegate. I know on my internal wastegate, you can shorten and lengthen the wastegate acuator arm to alter the boost levels. But since you are running ext. gate, then you can just buy a lower psi spring.
