Mods: Straightened exhausts, larger air filter, fuel controller. Port and polish and possible turbo later
BOVs made illegal in AU.
Get this, I really can't believe it.
A few weeks ago, police did a "sting" around Brighton Le Sands, an area in Sydney known as a hang out for modified cars, but no street racing goes on there.
The police had arbitary power to pull over any vehicle that looked modified, and inspect them for defects. If your car got pulled over, you had to follow the police to an RTA inspection unit, where your passengers got out and waited outside while you were tested.
If this was just standard testing, then I'd be okay with it. All cars should be at all times compliant with local emission, safety and noise laws.
However, the police also checked under the bonnet. If the vehicle had either
1) A Blow Off Valve
2) A pod style air intake or a CAI
Then the driver was slapped with a $100(USD) fine on the spot and his car defected.
Now, neither blow off valves nor pod filters are racing only components as far as I know. The police never claimed that they were illegal, the fine was actually for "undue noise". I can never imagine a BOV or an CAI ever getting louder than 90dB, which is the limit of noise output for a vehicle.
I'm in an interesting dilema, because S2000s have a pod style intake out of the factory floor. Are they going to get me for that?
Anyway, I do have a question. Are there such things as silent BOVs? Can you release excessive pressure without making any noticeable sound? If I tell police that my airfilter is stock, I might get away with it. But I want to keep my car stock looking and sounding as possible to avoid police attention.
Man, I am pretty angry about this. Most of our cars are fully legit, for a legit sport and police are targeting us for the sake of a handful of "ricers" with unsafe and illegal cars.
Blowoff valves supposedly vent pollutants into the atmosphere. They're not legal in California unless they're CARB exempt and I don't know of any that are. A friend of mine has a blowoff valve that dosen't make any noise unless he gets a pound or two near full boost then it just makes a little barely audible hiss, unlike the ultra loud SARD or HKS blowoff valves that make the really cool metallic noise.

So how do people in California vent off excess pressure when they close the throttle? I thought that blow off valves were a necessity in turbos and the only difference between them was how much noise they make.
I know that most stock turbos make next to no noise when they release excessive pressure... How do they do it?
People in CA install them anyway, just like lots of people in CA have exhausts, intakes, and lots of other performance mods that aren't approved for use in California. Most police aren't too anal about it, and not too many people have super-loud blowoff valves to begin with.
Blowoff valves aren't as nesscary as people think they are. There're many people in Japan wiht 500PS skylines with no blowoff valves. WRC rally cars don't have them, and the LeMans Porsche GT1 race car dosen't have them either. If you're power-shifting you wouldn't need one anyway.
There are blowoff valves that don't "pssht" unless you're at full boost. They actually work very well.

riiiiiiiight. :
A BOV is neccessary if you want to have you engine live a nice life. who wants damaging pressure trapped in their system to eventually destroy their turbo? I know I wouldn't...
Haha you can't read many of your aussie magazines just heck out your latest fast 4s, go fast bits or GFB sell blow off valves that release the pressure then put it back into the system many companies sell these kind of blow off valves they silent and no air goes in to the atmosphere.
At peak efficiency, BOV's are supposed to make a relaxed "sigh" sound. That's what stock SAAB's sound like. We like the "pssssshu" sound because it sounds bad-ass (and lets people know what's under the hood, w00t!)
This is just plain excessive though... the cops just hate imports, what can I say? I bet if there was a loud-ass Harley Davidson or a domestic hot rod / Camaro, etc, they'd let it slide in an instant. : I dunno what we can do though.
