when people say downpipe. they are talking about the pipe that bolts onto the exhaust side of the turbo and routes down under the car and meets up with the tailpipe.

basically, downpipe, is the turbo version of an exhaust system.
i dont think the downpipe is meaning the whole exhaust system tho, its just the pipe that goes from the trubo to the catalytic converter.

so im assuming they want the downpipe's diameter to be the same as the exhaust piping too?

to keep the best flow you want the rest of your exhaust system the same size as the downpipe.

and as big as possible so there is minimal backpressure on the turbo and maximum air flow

if 3" is gonna mean no a/c for ya, you can also go with a 2.5 expanding to 3" dp, few people I know are running that and dig it so far.

the downpipe on a turbo is essentially the same thing as a header in laymans terms. The turbo is bolted to the exhaust manifold and the exhaust spools the turbo, this spins the turbine on the intake side so it will suck up the air that is to be sent into the intake. On the exhaust side, you have the downpipe which expels exhaust gases to the catalytic converter and through the exhaust system. 2.5 in dp will work on smaller turbo's, it will work on a greddy turbo kit for a sohc, and prob for a dohc. Bigger turbo expel more gases, so they need bigger pipes to get rid of the exhaust.

Where could I get such a down pipe that goes from 2.5" to 3"...I can't live without the AC. For some people, some comfort still overrides speed.
