DRAG kit question (GEN II vs GEN III)

Hey guys,

I found someone selling a DRAG GEN II '93 LS turbo kit for about 1300. I was wondering if this is a good deal. I've heard good things about the DRAG gen III, and I was wondering what the main differences were. I know that they both come with t3/t4 turbos, but thats about it.

Does anyone know if the manifold from this kit will fit other b-series engines? I heard that all b series were the same, regardless of the year. How much of the piping will I need to redo to fit this on a newer b18b or even a b16? Thanks.

Now, dont hold me to this ok...

My understanding is that the gen-II kit was more of a one size fit all. You had to weld the downpipe and modify it to fit. Make brackets for the FMIC to fit, and you were more than likely going to have to modify the IC piping to fit your application.

The gen-III, eveything more/less bolts together. Sure with the massive t3/t04, you run out of room in the front, but besides that the IC piping is good, the downpipe will bolt up, and the FMIC has brackets ready to mount.... hope that helps...

i know from watching my buddy put drag 3's on cars....and that the block needed machining on three different spots because one was for an ITR, a GSR and a LS. I think that they should fit all b-series wit a little machining.....

Thanks for the replies guys.

So besides the piping and brackets, there's no big difference between the Gen II and III? I know that the Gen III has a better manifold, but other than that is there any differences? Thanks again.

Ahh, i am willing to bet that its the same manifold. That is what makes the drag kit unique. It is just about the only one that uses a cast manifold. Some think that it is worse, some think that is better.

As far as the price, thats not a bad price, but if you have to buy another manifold, thats $425+/-, and then if the IC piping isnt good, thats another $500+ then you might have to fabricate a new down pipe. That could be another $200, maybe less. I am a consultant so i always look at things cost efficiency wise. Add it up, and you are still cheaper than a new kit. Check out the Turbo, might not hurt to have someone look at it, and if it checks out i would do it.....

It might not be a bad opportunity to have the turbo rebuilt. Check out a reputable turbo shop, send them the specs of the car and application, and have it custom built to your specs. That might run you $250-500, BUT, you will have a hella turbo when its done!

thats my $.02
