GReddy BlueBox
I just got my turbo kit (it's used, but in great condition) the only problem is that I didn't get the bluebox (yet, i hope) but worst case scenario, if I don't get the bluebox, can I still run my turbo? I've heard that the bluebox only fools the ecu into thinking there's no boost running through the car, if that's the case, can I just use check valves in place of the bluebox? Also, do I need an FMU if i'm just running the GReddy stock 5.5psi on stock internals and stock fuel system? Thanks guys!

the bluebox supposedly controls your fuel curve underload and it may also fool your map sensor. you need sometype of fuel management system for dependability. you definetly need a fmu. the fmu raises your fuel pressure and it helps deliver the fuel you need at any boost level. a check valve or missing link is needed to fool your map sensor into thinking it's only getting vacuum when you boost.

hmmm...interesting. Does anyone know what the "blackbox" (i guess this came out before the bluebox) does? Thanks!

that's true si but the black box definetly doesn't disable vtec because i just had a dyno with it, and a vafc, and vtec clearly kicked in at 5,500 rpm. it supposed to control the fuel curve but it doesn't seem to work for the 96-98 civics. i was running way too lean with it. don't even worry about it unless your ride is 92-95. if you need mine you can have it.
by the way anyone know how to post pics so i can show my dyno?

Well...good news and bad news guys. I got the blackbox today (as opposed to the Bluebox) but I own a 99 civic. So is this basically useless to me?? What should I do now to complete my turbo set up? I don't own a VAFC or anything of the like (my engine is the D16y7 non-vtec) Any suggestions??

the black box wasn't designed for obd II cars. it only works for the 92-95 civic. i definetly wouldn't use it. it doesn't allow our cars to dump enough fuel. make sure you have a fmu. you should be able to run modestly at stock boost, no more until you address your fuel management. do your homework. good luck

ok..so could i buy the blue box instead?? (sorry if these sound like dumb questions, but I havn't been able to find much about it in my quest for boost) Or will I still run into the problem of being OBD II instead of like the older 92-95 OBD I civics? Thanks again guys!

I just bought a Greddy turbo kit w/blue box for my 99si, although it's not installed yet. Eventually when I have the money I plan on going with Hondata. From what I've read the blue box will give you problems (ie. blown engine) if you run too much boost. Some people are using a Vortech FMU instead of the blue box with the Greddy kit, but it's still a piggyback like the bluebox and they're spending money on things like Apexi VAFC in addition to other little half-assed bandaids. All this will add up. Decide now if you plan to run higher boost. If this is the case, just go with Hondata. You will have to pay for dyno tuning, but your car will have a perfect fuel curve and much more power. If not, then find someone who has the Greddy kit and has updated to Hondata or even $AEM. I'm sure they'd sell you the bluebox for cheap since it's just sitting there collecting dust. At stock boost levels the blue box should be fine.

Ok, i'm getting a little lost...so the vortech fmu can be used in place of the blue box??? I thought all the FMU did was raise hte fuel pressure in order to attain more fuel in the air/fuel mix? How can that be a piggy back? Also, from what I've been looking at the hondata website, they don't have anything for OBDII cars yet...or am I wrong? I want to run stock boost for now, but do plan on building up my engine to handle more, in which case i'd like to have a nice fuel management system (ie hondata, aem, greddy e-management, etc.)

Yes, the Vortech FMU can be used in place of the bluebox. I was under the impression that the term 'piggyback' is used to describe something that tricks the ecu and doesn't directly control it. Go here for more info (you might need to cut and paste):
For the Hondata you need to buy an OBD1 ecu which is compatible with your engine then have it modified by a Hondata dealer. Here is a link to the ecu swap guide at Hondata:
I'm still learning this stuff myself, but I hope you find the information you need in these links. If not, then do some searches on clubsi.com. Some of those guys really know their shit. There is a Hondata groupbuy going on in the got boost forum of that site, check it out. ********** is also good, but their search feature doesn't work well.
I have the blue box for sale, but it is from a 96 gsr greddy turbo. I have no need for the blue box so if you are interested and if it fits on your car PM me or email me.
