internal wg has a flapper (valve) that opens when desired boost is reached, it's good for low boost settings, they do cause boost spike when the boost is raised far enough.....or even at stock settings...
external wg vents into the atmosphere or routes back to the exhaust. It's connected to the turbo manifold. They both do the same job but the external is more adjustable and effective

So if I'm going for a homebuilt setup, how do I determine what I'm going for has an internal or external wastegate? Is it due to the location on the manifold.
it's all personal preference...
If you have the money and the manifold has a flange for it get an external wg, otherwise use the internal that comes with the turbo.....

Which manifolds have flanges for the external wastegates? How can I tell?

Well i know for a fact that the drag manifold has a flange for an external wg or if you have south florida performance build you a manifold just specify that you want a flange for the external wg.If you look at the manifold you will see the flange it's usually on one of the runners, you cant miss it.....

the greddy kit is set up for an internal wastegate, this would require getting a manifold with a place for an external waste, an external wastegate, and also doing modifiactions to the turbo that comes with the kit... I would suggest with just sticking with what comes with kit or looking into a different kit.

cool...
it looks like the greddy kit isn't something that can be easily upgraded...too bad, because it is an expensive kit...
Guys & Gals,
(uaoboarder and monkee too) negotiations have ended! The wife has agreed to let me get boost! I only have half the money and she agreed to use some plastic (Visa/MC) to fund the rest. Yeah, I'll have to pay it back, but by that time I'll have the car paid off (in about another month)! Whoo Hoo...Now I'll have to look into fuel mgmt (maybe she'll sponsor Hondata too?). I do have one condition for the boost.......she doesn't want it installed until May (right after I get my inspection). Now the question? I pose to you turbo junkies.....Rev Hard/Max Rev/Drag Gen3/Greddy?

The shops around here are charging about 4k for custom kits (and I still won't get everything I'll need). For instance, one local shop wants 4k for a custom kit with a Rev Hard Manifold, T3/T4E turbocharger, Tial Wastegate, and some other stuff (found in the Rev Hard Kit). That price doesn't even include the installation (about 300). Another shop wants 3500, but I remember when the owner of the shop blew his engine (H22) because he didn't know all the ins/and outs of tuning his engine. Now he states he can build me a kit (but really pushes the Greddy kit).
I think custom wouldn't be a bad idea, check out this site also you might want to check reputable websites to find great products and just buy everything you need piece by piece... of course a shop is going to charge you an arm and a leg, that's how they make all there money.
If you decide just to go with a pre fab kit, consider which kit comes with what, the greddy might be cheap, but it's cheap for a reason... it would suck to buy it and then have to spend alot more money to get it up to par with other kits out there.
btw, what kind of car is this for and what are your goals?

I want to go with the Rev Hard 2C Kit. It is for a 97 Base Prelude. As for the Greddy, I was told that I won't be able to significantly upgrade it without some major funds. I also keep hearing that it is a breeze to install-compared to other kits.
Oh, thanks for the site....I never knew this existed.....:
