Alright it has come that time to buy a turbo for my little civic ex, the guys at my local aftermarket shop have basically given me a price of 3grand for parts and 1 grand for installation (only cause i have zero clue how to put it in). They told me its a greddy but i to tell you guys the truth dont know much about this stuff and forgot which turbo they said came with the kit. They told me i would gain about 50-70 hp which is fine with me. They also told me that because the turbo will not kick in until about 2500 rpms that i should get like a 25 shot of nitrous and then have it shut off as soon as the turbo kicks in just so i get that much better of a launch. I guess my question or questions are, is that money i talked about sound about right? What do you think they are setting me up for turbo wise and is it good? and is that talk about nitrous a good idea.
Thanks
well for one, you can get a greddy kit for 1500 almost anywhere.
I dont know of anyone running a 25shot of nitrous that cuts off before the turbo, but I dont like nitrous, so that might be why,
maybe someone else can chime in about that.
But yeh, turbo wont spool up until a few rpm,
but its no biggy man, specialy with our small turbos.
plus you'll want to launch at a higher rmp anyways, so its no biggy.
you can get that stuff for alot cheaper than 3grand. And that nitrous is totally unecessary with that size turbo.
Tad, people runnin nitrous with the turbo use a pressure switch to shut off the boost automatically when a preset boost pressure is reached. this is usually only used on big turbos with huge lag times.
also, 1,000 for an install is insane! Pay 500 at most.
and overall, don't let your shop think for you when it comes to your car. I'm not knocking your shop, the employees, or your judgement, but it's best that you do plenty of reasearch into turboing your EX. There's a wealth information available here, and on manufacturer's sites. Take a look around and any questions you have, feel free to post up. You'll surely receive plenty of informative replies.
Also, a friend of mine here at school, and a fellow sho'er just got a nice t3/t04, new tial wastegate, hks bov, spearco FMIC, revhard manifold, all the piping, and various other parts all for about 1600-1700 by lookin around www.thepartstrader.com and other sites and gettin good deals. Ive seen several greddy kits on there for cheap. And again, for 1000, ill drive to your place and install that turbo for you. I would definatley not pay that much for a shop to do that. It will seriously take only a few(8?) hours to get that all together since that kit is made for the car. Recently my and a friend took off his old turbo on his talon, and completly replaced it with new one and some other parts all in a weekend with crappy tools and no previous turbo experience. So, maybe look elsewhere for the install or ask for a price reduction if possible.

I completely understand what your saying about the install price and i had a feeling that it was a little to high, who else would be willing to install a turbo, i dont think just any old shop would and i certainly cant do it myself, and god if i went to the dealership they would prolly give me a bill for like 3,000 so i dont know what to do
Bro, I just got a Drag kit for my Integra and I only paid $2700 brand new. No way in hell is a Greddy kit that much for a sohc. And everyone is right, 1G for install is crazy, unless they were dyno'ing it and all that. Greddy kit is not bad, Apexi makes a nice kit for Ex's. you should look them up.

I'm not sure what the shop was planning on doing. they told me that after their done and i open my hood its gunna look very different under there because i guess the 1 grand isnt just labor, im going to need a whole mess of new shit to compliment the turbo, so i dont exactly know what their doing. Hey how much boost am i gunna be able to handle with my motor? I'm just wondering if its even gunna be worth to spend even 3g's if i only get a little more hp.
shit I'll sell you the turbo kit for that car for 1500 bucks.. that greddy kit is no where near being worth 3 grand.... the turbo is smaller than a CD...

Originally posted by 91Integracer yup for those civics that turbo is really small... we ordered one for a local kid and checked it out... couldnt believe its that small
So is it really gunna be worth it. I mean how much boost or hp am i gunna get out of it, and also what is the max psi i can put into my motor?
These are where I started. Then, look at other setups for other cars (even the domestic vehicles). Some things are Honda Specific, but you'll always find that there's a common recipe for boost.....
1) Turbo (size/manufacturer)
2) Cooling the Turbo (oil/intercooler/etc)
3) Fuel (rich/lean)
4) Tuning
5) Research
*this list isn't just a quick and dirty
Buy a Helm book for your car and before you buy anything....do your research. Like everyone said, 1k is too much for an install. The greddy kit is bolt on (with some minor modifications-see site turbocivicsi.com)
You're going to want to go bigger and badder later (we all say we won't, but we eventually do), so go with a kit (or a custom job) that allows for upgrades. Drag/Revhard/Fmax/etc.....check out all manufacturers for kits and see which one will meet your need! good luck
