If you Spent $3k+ On turbo kit READ THIS!
hey,
This is my total of parts have cost me to date for my CUSTOM turbo setup for my 2000 Acura Integra GSR.
1. Used Drag manifold and downpipe ($300 shipped)
2. Used Greddy Turbo Timer ($40 shipped)
3. Intercooler piping uncut 2.5" mandrel($50 shipped)
4. Oil feed line and return line hose ($4 at hoemdepot)
5. Stainless steel braided wrap for lines ($30 from Russels)
6. Aireaserch T3 Turbocharger (rebuilt) ($30.00 from junkyard)
7. 1g DSM blow off valve w/flange ($5 from junkyard)
8. Vacuum hoses/fuel lines/clamps ($14 from home depot)
9. Accel 8mm plug wires ($31 shipped ebay)
10. Denso 1 heat range cold plugs ($1.39 each)
11.CP boost gauge *like autometer ($65 from T3 motorsport)
12.CP oil pressure gauge ($65 from T3)
13. Acura oil pan gasket ($33 from dealer)
14. Oil return tap fitting ($4 from home depot)
15. Custom 19x7(core) New Intecooler from JGS ($362 all new spearco core and custom tig welds, mint mint mint from JGS precision turbo)
Thats all i can think of right now. I still need a vortech fmu ($100) an external wastegate ($150) and more piping for my custom 2.5" exhaust. Im installing everything and welding everything. Total cost to date so far $1038 dollars.
Once the project is complete im estimating a good $1500 with a fuel pump, rail, and FPR. True buying a revhard kit or drag 3 kit, or a greddy kit you get ALL NEW PARTS which is awsome. But once you put the kit on its used. So i figure what hte heck, i need turbo, and i need it cheap, so this is what im doing and I'll let you guys know how it turns out!

The T3 turbocharger was only $30.00 and it was a piece from the junkyard. It came off of a 1986 Saab turbo car liek a 900 or 9000 model and i found 4 other saabs witht he turbos still on them. I pulled them all off and have since rebuilt each one with a rebuild kit from turbocity (cheap) and have cleaned them throughouly using a bead blaster and then repainted the oil cartidge and turbine housing using high heat aluminum temp paint. These T3's look like they are brand new from the factory (all honest) and since have sold 3, one want for 300 shipped, the other 2 i sold to a great guy Tony for $440 shipped for the both ofem. After he bought one he decided he wanted another it was so nice. I made a huge profit off of those turbos and im looking for more junkyards that have these cars and idiots who are willing to almost give them away! Its great.

Ya man! And its so much fun! its mad fun buildings this setup! All bolting things up and cutting and welding! I acutally enjoy doing it! I feel like a real performance mechanic! Sweet! It shoudl be done just a few days after i get my car back from the body shop!!! I cannot wait arggghh!
good luck man. im actually thinking about making a custom kit myself for my 3G lude. right now im helping a guy build a Sentra SE-R Spec V race car(read my thread "I'm a lucky fool" in the OT forum.) this guy is an engineer and has experience building turbo engines for a Porshe team. so i think we can get something together for around $1400. he even said he has a couple of turbos laying around in his house. he's even got his own welding equipment. but ill probably have to wait until we get the car built.
Custom is definitely the way to go. Can you say hands-on experience?!
One thing to consider, though.......$1500 is cheap, but if you're joe-schmoe that's wanting to build his own kit, then you have to start talking about costs for equipment (TIG/MIG welder, metal cutting tools, etc.)
Conversely, you can buy the priciest kit knowng to man, and have someone professionally install it for a grand.
When it comes down to it, it's a question of how much your time is worth to you, and how much you want to know about your car.
Nick

1500 is hella good, but!!!
I totally made a custom turbo kit, and spend less than 300, only thing i dont have is a fuel rail, and a turbo timer. Not trying to flame but custom is the was to go. It really helps if you make friends with some one who owns a shop.

Ya guys custom is sweet. Acutally my school has a mig welder and im doing most of my cutting and welding there they also have nice lifts and millions of tools. Although most of the work is performanned in my garage im gonna need to bring it there for the exhaust and intercooler pipe setup. Im gonna take pics of the setup once complete and postem up using my 40 dollar digi cam.
a friends of mines dad is a marine fabricator, does custom tubo jobs for boats. Im gonna have him build me a manifold, for just the cost of materials, or, i was thinking having him build me a custom twin t25 manifold, could you see it? a twin turboes accord??? one turbo for each 2 cylinders, into a dual exhaust system.......

uh oh! i ran into some trouble today! I was changing the oil on my friends GSR today in shop and saw the downpipe goes over the oil pan. This means i will have to remove the oil pan and tap it and then put it back on before putting the turbo assembly on. Darnit. I also discovered the MIG welder at school is out of gas or something and the arc welder cant reeach underneath the lifts for the cars. Good news, my friend has a MIG welder but i have never welded before and im pretty sure he sucks too. How bad a job could a newbie do to a custom exhaust pipe setup with MIG?
I spent about $500 on stuff I really need for the kit to work plus a bought a Blitz dual sbc boost controller and blitz fatt dc turbo timer. I got a Turbonetics t3/t4 (don't know the specs on it) turbo for free from a friend (I hope it's good) it was running on his car before he gave it to me when he bought a new bigger turbo.

U will be able to do it. Practice first. It won't look professionally, but it will be functional. Once your done just spray paint the intercooler piping and it should look better once that is done.
It was mandatory for me to take a marking period of welding in my auto shop so I have some knowledge (anything I do still looks sloppy, can't complain though). I was best at arc welding though.
