Internal Waste gate test

How can I test my internal waste gate before I put my turbo on my car? I mean is there a way to test how many pounds it takes to open the waste gate? I don't want to put the turbo on my car and then find out it's set at like 9lbs or something like that.
Also, are the threads on the actuator arm for adjusting the wastegate?

what you do is this:
take 3 pieced of vacuum line and a tee connector, plug an end of one vacuum line.........ahh fuck it, ill draw i diagram

im famous for my diagrams

pump the compressor or air pump one or 2 psi at a time until the arm of the wastegate starts to move outward. when it starts to move, that is the psi that it is set at, just look at the boost gauge

Thanks, I like diagrams.
What about the threads on the wastegate?

i doubt the threads can adjust the boost at all, i THINK they are for rotating the hole to match it up to the wastegate flapper lever on the turbo.
dont be modifying the rod if you want to adjust boost, the only way to do it right is modifying the spring in the wastegate or getting a mechanical or electronic boost controller

But if the wastegate is set at 9lbs and I only want to run 7lbs then it doesn't matter what I put on the vacuum line in front of the wastegate (generic boost controller, fancy boost controller, etc.) because the wastegate still won't open until it sees 9lbs.

thats exactly right, unless the spring is modified, all a manual boost controller will do is raise the boost, you cannot lower the boost with a controller.

1. replace the wastegate with one with a weaker spring
2. get an external wastegate
3. try to replace the spring you have with a weaker one without wrecking the wastegate

actually I am pretty sure if you shorten the arm(tighten the the nut) tha boost will be raised, to lower the boost make the arm longer(loosen the nut). There was a great site I saw that explained this all but I just can't find it, i will keep looking and try and post it up.

Cool, I would like to see that site. I thought the arm was adjustable because there's like a 1/2" worth of threads there to move that arm piece but I wasn't sure if that would adjust it.

sry, i have been looking and can't seem to find it. Basically it just had pictures of the dude moving the nut, he took the turbo out of the car but i'm not sure if that is necassary. Just make sure to have a good boost guage. Ill keep looking, I believe it was a 2nd gen integra forum.

messing with the rod is not a good way to adjust the boost.
when you mess with the rod you not only lower boost, but your turbo lag will increase and it will take longer to spool, you may get boost leaks through the wastegate dump port as well

I don't really understand how you would get more turbo lag by adjusting the rod on the actuator?? And as far as "boost leaks through the wastegate dump port" that would be just the same as adjusting an external wastegate too loose...just make it tighter....right?? Ive got over an inch of threads on my wastegate actuator arm, I doubt they are there to line up the rod to the flapper arm...why else would they have threaded that rod so much.

I've been staring at my turbo and what I've come up with is if I move the actuator arm down the threads then it will slowly open the wastegate flap which will let some exhaust out. Now to me that means that it will take longer to reach full boost because some exhaust is leaking out through the flap. If I'm right then that equals turbo lag because it takes more exhaust to spin that turbine to reach "x"lbs of boost. Now if I move the actuator arm up the threads then to me it looks like it would hold a tighter seal until the actuator sees full boost then it opens which in turn creats less lag. It has been bugging me to figure out how to adjust my internal waste gate to the 7lbs pounds that I want to use. The only thing I can come up with is that there's nothing I can do because what ever spring I have in there is going to stay in there and all I can hope for is that it is set for less than 7lbs and I can use a boost controller. If I'm wrong please tell me because I don't want to be right on this particular subject.
