Knocking

Hi guys,
Just got my car back with the built bottom end but there is a slight knocking comming from the pistons, They are JE pistons 9:1 on a B16a2.

Anyone know if they are supposed to do that and will it stop once it is run in?

Cheers

Steve

If the sound persists when idling, pistons are probably just getting worked in. Don't worry about. If it only comes on when you get on it, well then you may have a problem and I can't really tell you what it is from the description you have given me, you'd have to elaborate.

Hi, Sorry so vague in the description.

yes the knocking is all the time, worse once it has only just been started. its not loud just like a tapet loose but it defanitly is comming from the mid end of the engine.

Im hoping that it will go when it has been run in a bit.

Im not reving the engine past 3k and with 9:1 pistons you can imagine how powerfull that is (Not) , Just got to wait untill i get it tuned untill i can put my foot down, dont want to blow another engine after spending all my money on this one.

The engine management i am getting is a Dastek UniChip, which is fully programable for everything. This is the best i can get in the UK and there is no one over here that has the equipment to program a Hondata.

Booked in on the 2nd of december to have the chip fitted and tuned, so hopfully i will have a 250-280 BHP BEAST

You'd wanna be sure to change your oil and oil filter in about 1000kms or so.

I'd definitly worry about it. Take it to a few shops in your area and ask them what they think is wrong with it. Then, take it back to the one who did the work if they think it is a bearing and tell them to fix it. Does it get louder when under acceleration ?? It is loudest at first startup because the metal hasn't expanded yet. Take it to get looked at ASAP. And whatever you do, do not accelerate hard when it is knocking.

I took it back to the person that done it for me and he said that most forged pistons do it, but im not so sure!

When it starts, it is a bit noisy untill all the oil has got around the engine, and when i accelerate you cant hear it so much cos of the sound of the exhaust and stuff.

DWILSON! do normal forged pistons slip all the time?

Thanks for the advice.

Forged pistons have a looser tolerence when installed because they have a different expansion rate than cast. They are supposed to be a little noisy at start up and use a little more oil than cast, but they should fill up the bore and not knock when hot. How much oil are you using? If its a lot then your tolerances are too open. Contact JE and ask them what to do. Sounds like your shop got sloppy with one of the bores. Make them fix it right. Knocking is distruction; I'd quit running it. :

OK, I have heard back from the Tuning place and they have said that the person that installed the pistons etc, done the machanical timing wrong (It was 3 teeth out on the cams). :

Could this have been what was causing the knocking???

Still waiting to get my car back..... They are taking foreva, it doesnt look as though i will have it back before xmas now

Please reply,
thanks Guys!

Three teeth is a hell of a lot. I'm not 100%, but I think that is pretty much collision time.
