learning the terms

im new in looking for a turbo and have looking around at different brands but dont fully understand the abillities of each. An example of one is the:

HKS T51R KAI - 800 PS Output

COMPRESSOR:
-Wheel- 56 Trim - 70.3 Inducer / 94.0 Major
-Housing- 100 Inlet / 80 Outlet
TURBINE:
-Wheel- 76 Trim - 82.0 Major / 71.4 Exducer
-Housing- V-Band inlet / V-Band 115.5 mm outlet - 1.00 A/R

if someone could explain to me what the measurments like inducer, major, inlet and outlet mean i would be happy

First is the power rating. It depends usually on the inducer size, mostly. Inducer size is the inlet hole into a turbo, which sucks the air in. It also refers to the smaller portion of the compressor, in front. Major is the overall size of the compressor/exhaust wheel. Look up on the dissected pics to see what I'm talking about. Housing is the cover/chamber where air is pressurized/flows, does not affect power ratings on the compressor size. Trim is the ratio of inducerverall compressor wheel. It also affects power, for ex: t3/to4e 46vs 50vs57vs60 trim. The power ranges from 400to500 whp in that order. Honda people like 57 for some reason. Also t3 or t4 housings affect spool up of the turbo. Generally t3 will spool up quickly but will not be as impressive on the top end, depending on app. and engine size. A/R of turbo is also responsible top end/spool tradeoff. Usually companies calculate hp powetial of a turbo by multiplying its maximum flow in lb/min by 10. It is approximate and will depend on your setup. It also means that no matter how hard and how many psi you will push, your setup is going to be limited by compessor flow. Pro racing does this by limiting inducer size on the turbo, like in WRC. So, a v8 car running the same turbo is gonna produce about same hp as 4cyl with the same turbo, when pushed to the max, but with less psi and probably more tq. But with lager displacement you can utilize bigger exhaust housing A/R and wheel, making it more efficient.
What is your setup? Type of engine, displacemet, max rpm, maximum desired hp, response vs top end power required? How built up your engine is gonna be? Those are teh factors that decide turbo size.

lol, this guys real cool. i wish i was such a loser that i could spend all my time on the computer talking shit to guys i'm too afraid to call out in person. get a life man. if you feel that strongly about you biased opinion, why don't you go out and get people to race you. there are alot of guys that have civics and stuff with fart cans, and huge wings that think there fast, but dudes like the guys in here usually know what they are doing. i've never saw a eclipse with 900 horse power, whats up?

if dsm is so great, then why do they have to have a turbo to be decently powerful?

4g63-dsm's wouldn't move if they didn't have that t25 under the hood. But, they will handle a TON of boost...And AWD, but its old technology. Evo is really the new AWD dsm terror., but still they are not that hard to beat, because they have AWD drad.. Either way whats the need for the dsm flaming on top..

i have nothing against dsm. i do have a problem with the guy who is posting stupid comments about them though. i actually have considered buying a eclipse. my brother once had a older eclipse that we constantly beat on. it was automatic, which sucked, but it was decent, and cheap, and awd is cool. i'll stick to honda and subaru though. i have a legacy, not real fast, but awd, stick shift, and nice. so much fun in the winter time.

oh, i am sorry for sort of hijacking this thread, i will stop now. goodluck turboing your civic

Compressor Trim- The trim of the compressor refers to the squared ratio of the smaller diameter divided by the larger diameter multiplied by 100 of the compressor wheel. The smaller diameter of the wheel is known as the inducer, and the larger diameter of the wheel is known as the exducer.
