lots of highway driving with turbo

i have about a 30 minute one-way commute to work every day, 70-80 mph the whole way....obviously this is a lot of mileage but what would this do to a turbo setup? im just thinking that staying in boost for so long probably wouldnt be too much of a good idea...eg would it be smarter to not put on a turbocharger as this is a daily driver that im hoping will last for a while...

well, i can't say from experience, however my friend drove a 99 mercedes c230 kompressor 25 miles to and from school everyday for 2 1/2 years. his car still runs great, no problems with over 60k miles on it. he even drove it up and back to VA from FL a couple times. however that is a supercharger, and it is stock, and it is on a mercedes. but i say you shouldn't have any issues.

with a turbo its recommended to get a boost controller and such. so if you're doing alot of high speed driving and dont want boost...i think you'd just be able to back off the boost and fuel when desired..and crank it on fri nights to race
thats kind of an educated guess

if you find no useful information....try finding an intelligent eclipse or wrx owner/worker/salesman....maybe they can guide you how those cars do it. i'm sure the computer in those cars back off boost alittle for highway driving

Well I have just got a turbo on my tegra, you can quite easily stay off boost and do 120kmph, you will only starting boosting if you put your foot down ie WOT wide open throttle. But I'm sure you can boost in 4th and 5th just not to redline or anything silly.

Ive had my car for a year and put 25000 miles on it. It has been from NY to Miami to Indiana. A 1/4 of these are with the turbo. Ive changed the oil 4 times (so i figure 10K) since the turbo and havnt had any problems. I drove 800 miles strait through, 12 hours. Like a champ. You wont be under boost unless you give it more that %20-25 throttle. Dont worry about it. Turbo isnt there unless you want it there. Think of it that way!

yeah but see i drive long distances a lot but two hours a day of 80 mph is rough...especially for a whole semester...but sounds straight for turbo, that amount isnt too much of a good idea regardless so o well

I drive 400-600 miles a week. I think that is about the same if not more than what you will be doing. Thats on a regular basis too.

long rides dont do anything to turbos - AS LONG AS YOU LET IT COOL DOWN PROPERLY. you can boost all you want, as long as you have a BOV to vent it out while you're at WOT. safety precautions will help you in the long run. get the turbo neccesities.. Turbo Timer, Boost Controller and BOV. you'll be fine

Also don't forget that it probably shouldn't be the turbo you're worried about. As long as you don't shove things into it's blades, change your oil religiously and time your cooldowns, it'll be fine. Now the engine is another story. If you're just going to slap a kit on your car and pray for the best....do more praying so you don't drive as much. If you have proper engine management (Hondata stage 2 with boost is good enough), some larger injectors, and don't run rediuclous amounts of boost you'll be OK. Oh and I'd say an intercooler is a must on any turbo honda that's gonna be a daily driver. If you upgrade your internals (including the cylinder walls) you'll be able to boost more. But for the most part if you've got a turbo that spools up fully at cruise engine speeds then you have a small ass turbo.

i agree, a moderate amount of boost won't hurt your car. all the factory equipped cars run fine and are tuned for everyday driving.

Yeah just for example here is the setup I'm building up initally and the boost I'll run.

GT2530 (internal wastegate)
HKS Manifold
Tial BOV
Hondata Stage 2 w/boost
Eclipse side mount IC (Wings West Avenger front bumper for airflow)
440cc Injectors
Apex'i Timer

4psi Daily....6 psi track

After pistons, rods, new sleves and a front mount intercooler (probably some 550cc injectors)

12psi Daily...18psi at the track.

Also remember that if you do alot of stop and go driving you may want to get an upgraded radiator and fan. I've got the FAL and Fluidyne. An oil cooler would also probably help.
