Valve seals or rings please help

Ok i have did some reading but jus need a lil more help to pin point the problem for a friend.
he has a built 84mm gsr turbo. and just recently his car began to smoke a blue/white smoke and u can smell the smell of burning oil. so when he start his car up in the morning it smokes some but once he drives it partial throttle it goes away until he decels, then u see the smoke again, once he is sitting at a light a cloud of smoke comes from the exhaust. so w i told him to get on it to see if it smokes and it blows a small puff of smoke then it doesnt smoke while he is in boost. can someone help me pin point this.

have him do a compression test to pinpoint the problem. then you'll know if its either the rings or the valves. i'm betting its the rings tho...

most likely its the rings. my old build was exactly the same as you described and pulled it apart and it was the rings.

84mm turbo? wtf? Whats the real specs of this turbo? do you have a turbo graph for it?

I also agree its the rings. Theres a few things you can do about that, none of which are easy.

You can do an extended motor flush for about 8 minuites, but you have to disconect the turbo or it could ruin it. This would help remove deposits and free the rings up. You can also take out the spark plugs and spray some wd-40 in there and let it sit for a good while, this can also help losen up the deposits before you do your engine flush. If you need to change the oil, might as well do this while your at it.

How many miles are on this engine? How much boost have you ran on it? Whats its compression ratio at?

You can always try increasing the weight of the oil by 1 grade from 30weight to 40 I hope your using synthetic as well. If your already using 40 or thicker you better take it apart and change those rings.

The reason it doesn't smoke under boost is because the exhaust temps are so hot it just doesn't burn the oil a little, it incinerates it.
