After going through about 10 pairs of headphones this year, having each one suck worse than the last, I decided to read around and do some research and get some nice ones. Then I find that nice ones require a good sound source and a good amp to drive them. I decided on some headphones, amp, and soundcard and they're in the mail. I should have everything by next week, and I'll post a review of how it all sounds.
What i got:
Sennheiser HD595 Headphones (they're really light, extremely comfy, less than $200, around the ear design, but open air design)
HT Omega Claro PCI Soundcard (everything that the xfi series isn't lol)
Little Dot II++ tube amplifyer (tube amps give a warmer sound than solidstate amps)
Total price with tax and shipping and everything all figured in for all three items was $575.91, but this should blow anything out of the water that I've ever heard. It's also worth it because I work AND play on my computer, and I love music and games, and movies too. When I'm not sleeping, I'm on my computer, so this is going to be worth it.
The last pair of phones I had were the Bose Tri-ports, and aside from the complete lack of bass, I didn't think they sounded too bad but the hardcore audiophiles say that the tri-ports sound horrible so I can't wait to get my new stuff in it should sound lightyears better.
I'll post pics too if I can talk myself into clearing up my desk
wow dude, almost 6 bills for a head phone set...i'd probably never do something like that but if its your sort of thing, go for it...
what i'm planning on doing next year is build a home theater system from scratch (speakers and subs). buy the speakers from PE and build my own boxes and all...for sub, i'm thinking two sonotubes with two 18's and about 1,000 watts to each...that'll probably run about $1,500, and about another grand or $1,500 for the speakers, boxes and all, thats not including reciever, amp, and all that...thats my kind of audiopiles

i finished my home theater setup so i decided my computer is next lol, it'll be worth it though, like literally if i'm not sleeping i'm on my computer either working or playing, so they'll get their $600 of use
as far as my home theater, nothing fancy, 42" phillips lcd, sony up-sampling dvd player (waitin for hd-dvd players to drop in price [or blu-ray], whatever becomes more of a standard) a yamaha reciever, sony floorstanding speakers (even got my surround speakers properly mounted for the first time ever, and a bose center (only one i could find that would fit in front of my tv but be thin enough not to block any view (it's like the height of the tv's stand, works perfect). i use monster cables, hdmi, optical, etc. nothing precisely pieced together like you're gonna do but it beats just having a small stereo tube tv and nothing else
I've had: Sennheisers, Audio Technica, Sonys, etc. The A-T's are "in the ear" designs (buds). My good friend also has a set of Bose noise cancelling over the ear headphones that I've tried out.
But for that "Bang for the Buck" set: Skullcandy. They look kinda funny IMHO, but the sound stacks up there with the more expensive models I've tried, for a good less amount of money.
But... I'm not gonna put down anybody's choice of Senn's since I'm snobbish like that too.
