Blu-ray disc coatings starting to rot?

A thread over at the AVS Forums has highlighted a potential problem with the coating of Blu-ray discs, described by many as "disc rot" due to the mould-like spots that have made several owner's Blu-ray discs unplayable. The five page thread has reports from dozens of forum members, many of them discovering spots which can't be rubbed off on Blu-ray versions of "The Prestige." It's impossible to judge how widespread the problem is from a single forum thread, although it's not unheard of to see a product recall after a problem is discovered by users on a forum. It's also worth noting that for every user that has reported the spots, there's one or more people with discs that have no problem. If you've encountered the same issue, your best policy is to try and get a refund / replacement disc from the place where you originally bought it from. If enough people are reporting a problem, then retailers will be a much stronger voice than a bunch of consumers sounding off in the echo chamber that is "the internet."

This was going around the rumor mill before Blu-ray hit stores and is the only resin why I have not adopted Blu-ray personally, hopefully the boys at Sony will get to the bottom of this and find a fix.

Considering there are about 15 members of the AVS forum who have had this problem (out of the over 100 that have reported NOT having this problem) and that the problem seems to only been with a couple of copies of The Prestiege, I wouldn't get your pretty little feathers ruffled (not to mention I'm almost 100% positive this WASN'T going around the rumor mill).

And you do realize this is also an issue with CD's and DVD's as well? It's simply a problem on occasion with the disc being pressed and having too much oxydation, if I remember correctly. This happened to my Silent Hill DVD, and my original Superman Returns DVD (which I later repurchased on Blu-Ray).

But you didn't see me running in to trade in my entire DVD collection because me and maybe another 2% of the entire install base of a format had an issue.

Wal-mart IS only a few miles away, or even Best Buy, both of which take returns on faulty discs...

Still defending Sony like it's your own flesh and blood I see.

Oh so 15 out of 100 isn't bad? That is 15% if I did my math correctly, and didn't you label a defect percentage that high as "outrageous" in another recent thread? Not to mention the other product you were referring to is ALSO replaced under warranty, FOR FREE, within the first year.

If you don't like my numbers, wait a few months when that percentage is closer to 3%.

I'd ask if you had the issue, but you don't own (to the best of my knowledge) any Blu-Ray films, or a 1080p HDTV for that matter.

Quite frankly, the issue is being blown way out of proportion, and is nothing like the faulty hardware issue.

Quite a difference, IMO, between a $25-$30 disc (that can be returned to the store) and a $400 console that can't be returned to the store, and you'll have to wait for 3-4 weeks to get your COFFIN and THEN send it back to MS to "fix" (only to have it break again).

What's your collection sitting at? I've got 14 movies right now, I'm aiming to own about 30 by August / September. There's a lot of good stuff I want to own, and a lot of stuff already out I'm interested in purchasing.
