Blu Ray or Hd dvd?

Hey i'm lookin into buying either a blu ray player or a hd dvd player but i just can't fingure out which one. I was lookin at that LG player but damn, that crap is expensive and i heard it isn't all that also.

o yeah and which is exactly cheaper overall? Blue Ray or hd dvd? Like players, disc prices and such and such

Why couldn't everything just be one damn format?

thanks

also, if anyone knows any specials going on right now on either players, let me know thanks

Why not get a ps3??? blue ray player included, and a ton of places are throwing in 5-7 free blue ray movies. Of course that's if you want blue ray. If you want the hd dvd, the x box 360 has the same deal going on with 5-7 free movies. I personally think blue ray will win the battle since they have more studio support, higher capacity, and more computer manufacturers than hd dvd.

yeah i was thinking about that but i don't play much console games anymore. I haven't touched my ps2 at all in a few years and it's just sitting there collecting dust. $200 for the gamming option i might or i might not use is kind of iffy.

I could go back and forth about features, standards, prices, codecs, etc, but in the end, it doesn't matter. The industry has already decided who they want to win.

Blu-Ray.

Even Universal, the ONLY exclusive HD DVD studio, has admitted that they only reason they haven't jumped ship thus far is because they want the price war to continue. This way, prices drop down, and it because a more viable market for everyone, consumers buy more, discs cost less, and the profit margins will be higher.

So, basically, look for Universal to jump ship in about 6 months, and HD DVD to withdraw from the 'race' about 6 months after that.

So, in short, if you want the format that's going to 'win', go with Blu-Ray. More movies, more support, more possibility for 'more'.

Also, get a PS3, it's currently, IMO, the best Blu-Ray player.

Edit: I just read your post above. Just get the PS3, and use it only as a Blu-Ray player. I'm sure in the future you'll find some way to enjoy the gaming, possibly, and in the mean time, you've got a sick Blu-Ray player.

Otherwise, you could spend about $399 to $499 on an HD DVD player (the same as a PS3, roughly) or $350-$450ish on a 360, and then another $180 on an HD DVD drive.

I'd recommend a PS3, still, over all the others.

If HD DVD is going to drop out of the format race, would companies still make hd dvds for future movies? I guess they have to since if they didn't, a lot of hd dvd customers would be pissed.

Well considering that the PS3 “last time I checked” is the best Blu-ray player out its worth considering even if you don’t plan to play games.

It would go on for a little while, but not long. I wouldn't imagine many would continue to make movies on a dying format. Sure, it'll take time to 'die' like BetaMax did, but, I don't think it'll be quite the same.

Given that almost all Blu-Ray's and HD DVD's sport the same quality of visuals and audio, it's a toss up to which 'format' you really want to support.

VC-1 and MPEG4-AVC both provide the same quality, generally because Blu-Ray supports higher bit rates and has more space, so the quality difference is zero.

I mean, if nearly all of the major studios support Blu-Ray, and a few of them exclusively, along side nearly every hardware manufacturer...I think it's a clear call who to support.

But, again, this is just my take, and I've been known to be bias toward Blu-Ray. I own it, I'm extremely happy with it, and I wouldn't trade it in.

Now is a really bad time to buy anything related to home theatre. The technology is changing too fast. You've got LCD's makin bigger screens, but are expensive as f*. Plasmas are steppin up from 720p to 1080p, its all confusing. It was so much easier when it was just beta max vs vhs.

ever since i got a hd cable box from comcast, i've been hooked to the picture quality and crisp sound hd is capable of. In the beginning i'm like eh, it's too much just for better picture quality but damn. Maybe i should wait till there is a clear cut 'leader' in the race, and will probably get the ps3.

using DVD as a historical guide, it wont even be until about 2009-10 before mass public adoption. so if any1 says they can tell you who will win (that is if there even is a winner) is BSing you.

the BR camp will say theyve already 'won' over and over. and they have said that in the past, literally. the HD DVD camp will too, but less literal. imho, i agree w/ nielsen videoscan; that both will continue to exist far into the future. they also predicted VHS as winning way back.

if youre looking for a player exclusively, i'd say wait for a good dual format player. samsung's got one coming out that supposedly is only $50-100 more than their BR only model. LG has one already out, but its insanely overpriced and doesnt even support HD-i or BD-J.

if you are interested in PS3 games out now then thats probably the route to go. if you just want HD w/o spending a lot of money the toshiba HD-A2 is just over $200 now. ive seen PS3 and HD DVD on a nice 1080p LCD and both look pretty similar. only diff is the HD DVDs usually have more extras because HD-i is more robust than BD-J. HD DVD also uses VC-1 for most of its discs, BR used MPEG-2 for a long time and still does for some things which dont require as good compression (like some CGI kids movies). they both support MPEG-2, MPEG-4 h.264, and VC-1.

another problem present in BD players right now is the lack of a second tuner, its not required like the HD DVD spec. so the only PiP there has been has been a kludge where they pack 2 copies of the movie 1 w/ a PiP one w/o. instead of playing back both at the same time. doesnt work as well. the only BD player out now that i can see maybe overcoming this is the PS3; if, they can soft code it.

so ill go w/ wait. everything HD related is going to drop in price a lot in the next 7 months. BD-J doesnt get standardized till halloween, so if youre leaning BD thats the date new models will be required to support it. HD DVD has been standardized since the beginning, so any movie out in the future will play fine.

there's a decent sized thread about this over
HD-DVD or Blu-Ray?

you could go back and forth about them but then youd be forced to admit sonys been doing a bad job w/ regards to features, standardization, prices, codecs, etc..? convenient

this is the first ive heard of universal talking about a price war, much less their "only reason". source? oh and btw, universal isnt the only HD DVD exclusive HD DVD studio. i already corrected you about that here

HD-DVD or Blu-Ray?
Quote:
also FTR, there are 3 exclusive studios Universal, Weinstein, & Studio Canal. Weinstein isnt a grandfathered studio though & Studio Canal is mostly a european studio; licensing/releasing US movies as well as european movies.
and again, it matters only if studios stay exclusive. like i said before were still far away from public adoption; and until that point comes saying either is winning is pretty pointless. its like predicting who will le mans based on the fist lap. its a slightly more informed decision, but its not even close to accurate.

your economics are partially right, but a price war is in the consumers favor not the studios. having 2 formats sustain is in the studios format because then not only do you have more factories making contract bids but you have 2 licensing groups who will compete on price making movies less and/or more profitable. what do you think are going to happen to all the DVD plants?
sony has more exclusive studios atm because they offered better deal conditions to the studios. & because they added a second layer of encryption to their format (BD+). great for preventing piracy (not), great for stopping any1 w/ legitimate use for a backup or compilation/presentation, you bet.

universals gunna go BD exclusive in 6 months you say? what's this remarkable conclusion based on?

$400-500 on a HD DVD player? more like 1/2 that. look at the HD-A2 on amazon. $250 now, not on sale. it was something like $180 on sale a little while back. +5 free movies, something BR is offering now too.

obviously you recc the PS3, any1 whos ever poked their head in the gaming forum knows youve got sony sheets on your bed and a shrine to ken kutaragi on your dresser. i kid i kid

but really though, enough FUD?
