Disney backs Sony's 'Blu-ray Disc' as next-generation DVD format

Oh-uh... This is going down a bad path. One side is gonna have to blink as I doubt consumers will support both formats.

Disney backs Sony's 'Blu-ray Disc' as next-generation DVD format

(Kyodo) _ The Walt Disney Co. said Wednesday it will use Sony Corp.'s "Blu-ray Disc" technology as the format for releasing movies and other content on next-generation DVDs.
In late November, four U.S. film studios -- Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures, New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Studios --said they would adopt HD DVD, Blu-ray Disc's rival technology, as the next-generation DVD format.

HD DVD was developed by Toshiba Corp., NEC Corp. and other companies, while the Blu-ray Disc has been promoted by Sony, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. and others.

Walt Disney will join other Hollywood studios such as Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. and Metro-Goldwyn Mayer Inc. -- both of which are Sony units -- and Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp. in adopting the Blu-ray Disc.
