The DVD Forum, the international DVD standards authority, has approved a 51 GB single-sided triple-layer HD DVD disc for production. Extension to the HD DVD standard, which was submitted by Toshiba in April, received approval on 31 August 2007. Other recent developments include…
- A single-sided triple-layer HD DVD/DVD hybrid (combi) disc, the DVD layer of which would be playable by legacy DVD players, is expected to be approved before the year end.
- The Forum has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with China’s Optical Memory National Engineering Research Centre (OMNERC) regarding licensing of the HD DVD-ROM China (formerly HD DVD-ROM China-only) format, specification for which was approved earlier this year. The only difference between the latter and the standard HD DVD format is the modulation scheme: the optical pickup in HD DVD China player will be able to play standard HD DVD discs, although Chinese discs will not be playable in standard HD DVD drives. According to the Forum, the Chinese government is keen to introduce the format domestically before the Olympic Games in August 2008. Large-scale integrates (LSIs) are already under development by manufacturers and use of AACS for the format is currently under negotiation.
I am not saying 1 more GB will do much, but take that Blu-ray!!! Soon you know Blu-ray will do the same and say they can beat HD-DVD somehow.
No matter which side you are on you have to be enjoying this competition. Hopefully the price range won’t ’settle’ at too high of a price point. . .but still, at least we’re seeing better products now than we normally would be(if there was only one format).
I remember some time ago saying that HD-DVD was going to do 51 gig disks, and someone “not naming names” said it would never happen because the format was locked in its current feature format.

I can imagine it probably costs more money to produce a triple layered HD DVD with a DVD on the flip side, than it does to produce a single Blu-Ray.
To each their own, keep it going toshiba. The Blu-Ray Disc Association approved and developed a 4 layer disc what, a year ago?
Meh, I enjoy paying less for my BRD's on Amazon, compared to the premium that HD DVD comes at just so I can have the DVD side I'll never watch.
well most of the movies arent on combo 1st of all. & secondly they're going to offer non-combo versions alongside the combo versions soon. Unleashed was the first released alongside the end of June. Departed, Letters to Iwo Jima, Kiss kiss bang bang, etc.. all coming out the beginning of Oct on non-combo. all the same price as BR versions on amazon.
a little research will also get you great deals. Fry's has great prices & selection. Best buy has the worst prices but decent selection, CC is usually better than BB by a couple $ but has a slightly smaller selection.
you could even import on some releases on non-combo which were combo in U.S. ezDVD.com.au (w/ exchange rate about $21.50 each)
the lack of region coding also means you can get lots of movies which arent available in the U.S. yet (also means you can get BD exclusive movies in the U.S. on HD DVD a lot of times because of different licensing internationally)
the 4 layer BD discs will be great for PC, but BD's lens setup might make it hard to focus layer ID on SA players because of how close the layers are. either way, 100GB for a movie is beyond overkill. thats a tad under 9 hours, nobody needs to sit on the couch for that long.
oh & btw, the dual layer BDs now arent 50GB. according to insiders there are only 2 BD plants (both Sony's) that are producing even 50% yield because of pooling of the scratch-resistant coating (silicon dioxide resin) at the edges making that area unreadable. to achieve this 50% yield theyve been removing about 8GB of space from the outer edges. other plants (Cinram, Deluxe Digital, Infodisc) have been getting about 10% yields. so, the yields for the 51GB discs would have to be very bad for them to cost more to manufacture.

And I'm sure everyone will appreciate waiting 4 to 5 months for non combo discs.
Look, you like HD DVD, cool. I support Blu-Ray for the same reason you don't support Sony. I simply want to see someone 'new' at the king of the throne. I just see HD DVD as another way for Toshiba to short change the consumer and give us less for the same.
I'd rather have Blu-Ray become a standard, like DVD did, and have that in my home, with more space, more applications, etc, than be stuck with HD DVD, just because it is limited to using a VC-1 codec.
